Geographical reasons lol. The car was booked in at worthos and they know my cars history and were prepared to change the pump etc (service has always been top notch from Worthingtons - highly recommended) but I wanted it changed sooner and Parramatta is closer than Gosford...

This is why you don't go to Trivett. The service techs are a bunch of assholes who treat their customers like sheep. I travel to Gosford for a reason.

Tell those guys to shove it, and make it complaint at BMW

I wonder if they have even try to lodge a warranty claim. Might be more profitable to just charge you for opening the bonnet.

If the dealer logged a mod on your vin number and has done there job correctly BMW Australia warranty Dpt will know about your car / vin number.
So when the dealer trys to do a claim it may get knocked back by head office, its not up to the dealer to accept a warranty claim they need the go ahead from BMW AUST

Return your car back to 100% standard.
Take it to a different dealership and try your luck.

This is why I go to worthos. They're happy to not put anything on your VIN.

Trivett offered to provide the part free out of Goodwill but I'd still have to pay for the labour + coding... total of $850.

I politely told them no thanks I'll get it done elsewhere.

I'm going to ask one more dealer, off the record, whether my VIN is logged in any BMW Australia warranty claims, and if not might take it to another place where I have a pretty good relationship.

Otherwise Pete @ Advan it is

It is a job that you can do or any independent can confidently do. It requires no coding is actually not hard at all. The HPFP BMW dealer retail here has come down, can't recall exactly but i think it's about 800 ish, so installed it would be less than say 1200.

Dealers don't actually make the calls on the cars regarding warranty, usually BMW Australia do. As some parts are what i call sub standard for a brand like this (ie HPFP, injectors etc) may be taken into consideration by BMW and they may offer assistance even though the car is out of warranty. They will open a PUMA case for this. (They may offer free parts but you pay for labour) This does vary and some warranty is terminated depending on dealers or if cars have modifications that can be implied to cause another part to fail. In the OP's issue, it looks as though he is getting a hard time for no just reason.

Stu, you should take them up on their offer to give you the HPFP part for free and then get it installed elsewhere!!

If no dealer will help you and you have been 'logged' on some blacklist, maybe you've got no choice but to go straight to BMW Australia and play some hard ball. Tell them to justify how an air intake can cause the HPFP to fail. And that's within the context of the part being widely known to be faulty (inevitably fails on every car) and subject to a recall/10 year warranty in USA. Ask them politely/ in a letter if they'd like to try and prove that in court.

Yes, BMW Australia will pay parts out of goodwill even though it is out of warranty. As for the labour cost, reckon you should your car to the dealer where your car was originally bought from, they might offer some discounts on labour.

Couldn't be stuffed dealing with warranty claims etc so I changed the fuel pump myself over the weekend.

Have since taken the car for a bit of a squirt and no limp mode

I took lots of pics so will write up a DIY.

In hindsight, relatively easy and inexpensive job.

excuse my ignorance, but what are the symptoms of a failed HPFP?

since i installed the procede i noticed the occasional fault when accelerating? thought this was more related to a self tuning issue?

long cranking in the morning and limp mode/faults when accelerating could be a symptom too. I couldn't accelerate pass 3k RPM, without going to limp mode, when my HPFP was dying.

Yep as mentioned
- long cranks in the morning
- limp mode after hard driving... you'll feel it when your car is in limp mode, if you've ever driven a 320i it'll feel similar to that.

Towards the end (i.e. after diagnosing a failing fuel pump a few weeks ago but not changing it until the weekend) it wasn't just 3k I couldn't rev past but I couldn't apply more than say 30-40% throttle, as it would strain the engine too much... going up hills sometimes caused limp mode
Funnily enough when limp mode was coming on more frequently, I didn't get long cranks anymore...

~$350, maybe a little less, I ordered a few other things as well so it's hard to determine the actual shipping cost.

But yeh I mean now that we know it's $350 max and a few hours labour to change a fuel pump who needs warranty
