First motorkhana and I won!

So today was the first motorkhana since I got the car a few months back. It was with the Autosports guys out at Oran Park.

The morning consisted of a couple of driver training courses with your usual wet 'lane change' and 'pull the handbrake in the corner' tests.

After lunch they got the stop watches out and setup three different courses. Each driver got three attempts at each course with the best time counting. I was the first person on the 'clover leaf' and went ok but struggled with understeer (probably due to being the first person on a dirty concrete course). My times were all pretty consistent and still held up to 2nd best after the rest of the 30 drivers went through.

After that I did the "Bozzman" which was a series of four hairpin turns starting and finishing in a central garage. This one didn't suit us so well but managed to pull out the best time of the day only have it disallowed due to me over-running the garage by about 10cm! My second best (0.8 sec slower!) was still good enough for 2nd on this one.

The final test was a simple slalom, hairpin then slalom back to the garage. This one suited the BMW well - I would definitely have been the quickest down the slalom section but nailing the hairpin properly was REALLY difficult. My best attempt wasn't that great but still good enough for 3rd on that one.

I went home not knowing the results as some cars were still running when I left but was surprised to see tonight that when all the times were added up I actually won!!! It was a real surprise considering all the cars that were there - some really modified examples with good drivers too.

Anyway, all good practice for some other events coming up later in the year - I just need to find a way to get my handbrake turns right!

Anyway know of some deserted car parks that I can use for practice?

Here are the results (Mark Croudace was co-driving in my car):

Congratulations, well done.

Good to see the 135i outperform cars like the EVO and STI.

Jeff, firstly well done, but you are not the best driver out there.

LOOK at number 19 - Dave. You are only 10 seconds faster than an Outback after 3 rounds of motorkhana.

I have beat Wayne in motorkhana before. He was in a 911, I was in my RX-8. Hehe.

Well done Jeff. I guess the LSD works well!!! Beating EVO's in these things are pretty impressive. But you may have much stiffer competition at Duttons later in the year. Good luck there and keep us updated on your performance leading up to it as well.

Yes you certainly did! By the smallest of time mind you. Could have been a timing error . In my defence, 911's aren't the best motorknana cars anyway. They don't have the balance required for a motorkana and too much power is pointless in these things especially because ours was a wet motorknana. Or at least that is my excuse. And as long as I am faster than you on the track that is good enough for me.

Hey, you may be good enough in your 135; but remember your 911 at Boardford?

You now have more power and more grip. No excuse to go slow at Winton now.

Hahaha. Do you remember I had bold tyres with chucks fallen out of the rear tyres? And yet I did the same time as you!!! :P

Winton may be a disaster to be frank. I still don't have tyres and the right fronts are completely gone. Hey should I swap the fronts around? THe left side is still in pretty good condition as Sandown is all right hand turns. I really cannot remember what Winton is like because I have only been there once and that was 6 years ago! We really need to both go to a brand new track with the same car and see how we go. I suspect we are pretty even based on all the times we have seen over the years.

Do you Aussies ever do any "American style gymkhana" or Autocross? I know it takes some skill to flick a car about like you do on your style of gymkhana course. It'd be cool to give it a try when I come over to Victoria next year.

Yes we do but we tend to do big stuff... circuit sprints!

Motokhanas are a heap of fun, and my car is reasonably good for it. Not quick by any stretch but easy to flick around.

How often are they run? Would like to do a proper one one day in melbourne.

There are motorkhana championships. I overlook them when I receive mail from CAMS.

They are done in a lot of country towns. They hold hill climbs more often though.

I like both but for different reasons.

Track work takes a lot more balls as you are talking high speeds and big commitment.

With the Motorkhana stuff it is really tight and technical. In my mind this tends to separate the better drivers as the car is less of a factor in the outcome. I find these events really enjoyable as you can have a big go without the worry of putting it into the wall. I'm a bit of a hoon at heart so I like doing the 180 degree power turns too!
