Transmission Fluid not changed at 1200 miles?

Hey everyone,

I know the topic of which transmission fluid to use has been beaten to death, but I have a question about WHEN the transmission fluid should be changed.

I am in contact with BMW of Austin, as my 1M will need its 1200 mile break in service performed there on my way back from PCD. I got in contact with them early to make sure they had all the necessary parts and fluids, so I wouldn't be stuck in Austin. They said that the 1200 mile service is just oil and differential fluid change and that the transmission oil was changed with a later service.

Has anyone else heard of this? Short of a forum post, how can I guide them in the right direction?

Thanks!

Per the break in thread... this is correct. I had my car serviceed while travelling, and BMW of Irondale in Birmingham ended up giving my car an m service... So they did change the trans and diff... but they used the wrong engine oil... they used the 10/60oil... I need to locate the other thread and see what other oils they used for diff and trans.

sticky...

http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...strol+diff+oil

the correct oils are:

Engine: 5w30 full synthetic oil LL-1 (same as for non M models) - 7 liters
Trans: MTF-LT-5 - 2.0 liters (although some say 1.2L)
Diff: Castrol SAF-XJ (+FM friction modifer) - 1.2 liters SAE 75W140 GL5 BMW

BMW NA does not change the tras fluid. Firs they did not they don't.
BMW AG (european dealer network) DOES change the trans oil. Since this service is on the customer and not BMW!

I would pay to have the trans oil changed IF it were my car.

Per the June service bulletin, the tranny oil is changed at 50,000. This in ONLY for NA. Search this site for actual bulletin scans I posted last month. The tranny oil is NOT changed at 1200.

i swear my invoice is in another language..

here is what it shows

1 oil filter elment 11-42-7-566-327
8 TWS synth oil 07-51-0-009-420 TWS 10/60
1 windsh washer 83-12-0-405-186 Windshield washer antifreeze
3 final drive gear oil 83-22-2-282-583 Final drive Gear oil SAF-XJ - yep... No FM (friction modifer)
4 1/2 liter 83-22-0-406-941 Service - runnin in check (additional job at 1st engine service)

my invoice indicates that at 1268 miles, my car was overdue for the service by -118 miles - which means the light came on at about 1150 miles

I am aware that they used the wrong motor oil... and I really am unconcerned about engine oil
Engine oil is not like blood RH factor.. the motor isnt going to reject 10/60 It is curious that of course they blew right past the decal on the front of the engine bay indicating 5w30 and with the part number right there. Guess it's a good thing they are auto mechanics and not hospital employees!

if someone can find out what the 4 1/2 liter oil is... I believe thats the transmission oil? I would be much obliged.

If they actually changed the gearbox fluid in error.. as well as the other errors in engine oil and diff oil, it's a wash to me... free trans service in exchange for the wrong engine oil and diff oils. *shrug*

I was not able to find any of these part #s on real oem

That's the correct p/n for the diff oil so they did get that right.

I'm not finding anything on the 0 406 941 number, though.

I had my 1200 mile service performed at BMW of Austin and they did change the transmission fluid (or at least it's on my invoice). If you want my service advisor info, etc., just send me a PM.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I will get in contact with them and see if they can change it and what it would cost for me to have it done out of the normal rhythm.

For the record the folks at BMW of Austin have been extremely helpful and accommodating, just questioning them about this.

Just had my 1200 mile service done, they did not change the Transmission fluid. They said it's due on the next service. My sales person said they couldn't even order the correct fluid?

Never seen such an issue with fluid types and rarity of the fluid before.

+1. That is what I would do if I owned a 1M. I have changed my trans and diff fluid myself. It was not that hard. You can look up my DIY trans/diff fluid change.
