Alpinem3 is right. The Germans say all the individual numbers and it dates back to the days when indeed the last 2 numbers reflected the engine size. Eg 130 has 3 point 0 litre engine , 323 had 2 point 3 litre engine etc. At the end of the day though it's your call and most will understand you any way it's read.

The trend I see it, people say what ever is the shortest syllable wise, and when it is equal, people favour calling the last two digits combined.

Same here. I think this might be more of a (North) American thing, as I've noticed people from the UK (and, apparently Australia,) seem to prefer one-three-five.

1-3-5.

For those that say 1-3-5, how do you say 125?

I refer to the 120 as the one twenty

Watched an American doco on the Ferrari factory today and he called the 599 the five ninety nine. So I don't really see that the engine number coincides with what to say. I just think that Americans say all 3 digit numbers for cars like that. It's a cultural thing.

When I read your post above I automatically read 599 as 5-9-9.
However Porsche for some reason is different - its Porsche 9-11 instead of Porsche 9-1-1.

When you think about it, saying one. thirty-five makes no sense...

It really should either be one - three - five

or

One hundred and thirty five

There is no dash or digit to pronounce the 35 part as 'thirty five'.

And yet, as someone mentioned before, I say nine-eleven, not nine one one... mainly because of cultural upbringing because I have only ever heard people refer to it as nine-eleven...

We just say the easiest words:
one-twenty-five = four syllables; one-two-five = three, why waste your breath if you can express the same thing?

three-twenty (two words and the last syllable is not accented) is certainly easier to say than three-two-zero (four syllables) or three-two-oh (three words).

When the 318 still existed, three-one-eight rolls off the tongue much better than three-eighteen with the last syllable accented.

My 2 cents or over analysing

I say 3-18 9-11 5-99 etc.

It makes sense with bmws...think about it 1 = model 35 = engine designation so put em together 1-35-i.

But there's not right way to say it and calling Americans stupid for a stupid reason is stupid.

There are Plenty of other things to make fun of Americans for. Don't be greedy and try to make more

I have a chinese background, so I just literally translate how we would say it
