I just read a very interesting paragraph in the white leather book.

Look on page 35 of the white leather 1 series commemorative book ( You know, the book provided to us by BMW):

"But the big power gains will likely come from computer tuning and turbo boost management. Several companies already specialize in BMW computer engine management, and we know of several who are already developing programs to increase the performance of the twin turbocharged 3.0 liter engine. Because of the legendary reliability of BMW inline 6 engines, they should be able to handle higher than stock power levels with no decrease in durability."

I expected to read something more like, "We designed the 1 series with more than enough power and do not recommend aftermarket tuning of any kind."

Apparently, BMW has some confidence in their engines. Hmm..

Could that statement be used against BMW if you had a Dinan Flash and the car blew an engine where BMW tried to void the warranty on? I could say BMW basically said in a book they published that is was ok to for aftermarket tuners to upgrade the ECU,

Amazing.. I think you need to post a scan of that! I'm shocked to see an official BMW document suggesting actions that void your warranty...

Technically, the chapters are written by various authors. It really doesn't read like an official owner's manual. They probably have a small-print legal statement somewhere in the book.

I would take a picture but I just put it back into the box and carefully pulled the plastic back over it for safe keeping.

Unfortunately, the article is written by JG Pasterjak of Grassroots Motorsports. I don't think it would qualify as an official stance by BMW.

None the less, it's in an official publication and it opens a ton of legal matters; however, they have more money than you do and can wait you out if it gets that far.

If your car has leather, you got a leather book, if you have leatherette, you got a leatherette book...

BTW, we might want to keep this little dirty secret, a secret till we really need it!!! SHhhhhhh... Or we just might get a disclaimer next time we go for warranty work...sign here...you agree that the leather/leatherette book now stipulates any work you blah blah blah...

The last page: "we do not assume any liability for the accuracy or completeness of information presented. This book shall not be used or relied upon as a substitute for information that is available from your BMW center... The opinions expressed by the contributors are theirs alone..."
blahblahblah you know the drill.

I didn't get that far but figured it was in there somewhere.

Thanks!
