Is there any difference between removing the CDV all together and installing a CDV with the restrictor popped out?

No mechanical difference. Its just when you re-use the CDV with the restrictor removed... it has a certain "stealth mode" - when you take your car in for service(should you have any trans related problems in the future).

Just did this mod. Used vice grips to clamp the line (wrapped a towel around it so it wouldn't cut into the rubber). Unhooked everything, literally only lost a few drops of fluid. Had the wife give 1 pump on the pedal w/ the bleed screw open after everything was re-assembled. Now all good to go!

Hopefully this resolve my gear grinding issue that I have from shifting quickly.

Does the CDV replacement have any ill effects? Like possibly more damage to clutch during occasional rough shifts or anything like that. I've been thinking about doing it, but I don't' want to mess anything up

So people use an extra CDV with the jet/venturi knocked out so a dealer can not tell from outside that the CDV has been messed with.

There is no real down side to this mod. Only thing I can think of is IF you don't bleed the clutch properly or have the proer tools... can the CDV be a bear of a job. MAKE SURE you have a pressure bleeder if you are going to do this mod yourself. Or have a good indi shop or dealer do it for you.

Hands down this is one MUST HAVE mod to have on any BMW manual trans car.

Any dealer can order you one. Then just take a 3mm punch and knock out the orifice/jet/venturi. Done. Dan@United or Jason@Tischer can also hook you up with an OE cdv.

Here are my pics from page five of this thread, post #97...

standard CDV

2mm inner dia rstrictor

I used a 4mm punch to remove the restrictor. One firm luv tap!

tools needed to remove the restrictor

and some German brake fluid DOT4.

I just did the CDV delete this afternoon - I had the car up on Jack stands to adjust my handbrake, so while I was at it, jacked up the front as well...

Getting the plastic panel off and back on took way longer than removing the CDV. Just used my thumb over the hose, didn't get a single drip other than a tiny bit of brake fluid on my thumb. One gentle press on the pedal and tightened the bleed valve and that was it.

Great, free mod

just 2.5 years into ownership, I FINALLY got around to doing this. What the fuck was I waiting for!? It's a mandatory mod!!!! I'm in LOVE with the way the car drives now! I should have done this on day one but was slightly intimidated by the clutch bleeding process. It was pretty easy with the exception of opening and closing the bleed valve. They give you absolutely zero space to get a wrench in there.

Modified CDV installed too ! Just unpluged the OEM one and pluged the new one in ! Simple and fast

The pedal is smoother, shifting is better and I'm very happy with it ! I should test it with hard driving later ^^ !

Thanks Larry
I never ever return fluids to a vehicle. Ever. Too much of an opportunity for contamination, and air bubbles could be in the expulsed fluid defeating the purpose of the bleed.
Just my opinion.

A little primer on bleeding

Quote:

Absolutely. If there is any air in the system at all, it will compress under pressure and will not transfer the pressure to the destination, or 'end of the line'. Anytime a closed system such as this is exposed to air bleeding is required.

Edit: I've got these few other questions I really want to understand before I start modding cuz I don't want to leave my car dead on the lot

1. The fluid will flow out of the clutch fliud line (the soft one), how about the other side (the metal one)? Will it also flow out from the metal side and that's why we have to fluid? OR, is it because the air will get into from the metal side, so that we have to bleed?

Fluid will flow out of both. The 'metal' side is connected to the end of the line and does not have much fluid in it. It really does not matter much if this all leaks out. The rubber end, however, is connected to the reservoir and must be plugged or the reservoir will drain. I like golf tees to temporarily plug a line such as this.

2. What's the principle of bleeding? Which one side (among soft side and the metal side) will the air gets into so that we have to bleed it?

Bleeding is done when the system is rejoined, making the discussion of 'sides' moot.

2nd EDIT(,hah, I just did some further search): If I just clamp the soft clutch line and make sure only .001mL of the fluid flow out, do I still have to bleed? Thanks again!
Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!

I fear for the safety of those who do not bleed.
