Ground clearance near miss - Beginner's luck

Close encounters of the sidewalk kind: the pictures speak for itself.

Way too close for comfort for my 1M. Definitely my mistake. Needless to say I choked when I got out of the car and noticed this close call (which passed under the PDC radar). True near miss: not one single scratch and happy for that. Man, just the thought that the tips and exhaust would have been pushed inwards by the sidewalk.

If, alike a cat, a 1M has nine lives, than I guess my 1M has eight since this afternoon. Unlike incidents, we tend to forget most near misses. The stock ride-height saved the day for me. I'll have a toast to that this eve.

By all the scratches next to you on the sidewalk, you can tell others weren't so lucky.

Had a very similar encounter with left set of tips. Low wall.

PDC didn't detect it but I knew it was there.

Photos like that make my testicles flee up into my inguinal canals. That could have been ouch-time. Don't gain any weight or it could be bad next time!

dang Art, that's crazy close! i can't believe you didn't get any indication of how close you were. it seems like my PDC picks up every little thing! that's so close that i would wonder if the weight of having an extra person in the car wouldn't had different results. ouch.

you can tell by the pictures that it's happened to a lot of other people

When hitting low rear obstacles whilst parking backwards, the exhaust tips are the first victim. As the pictures show, ground clearance for the rear bumper is higher than the one of the tips. But the lowest point of the car is the diff. Beware of sidewalks and speed bumps!

Close but no cigar

Oops, I did it again...

Earlier this evening I thought having sufficient ground clearance for negotiating the parking spot obstacles at a shopping mall parking. Indeed no contact, but a close encounter I prefer to avoid. Anyways, the underside of my front bumper isn't immaculate anymore (high curbs).

Dack, can he get any better than this? He says it does not touch! What? With a split mm. or less maybe, like a competition parking We need to congratulate him.

Artemis, bottom of my front bumper is probably not even VO colored any more, one reason why I am holding myself about the Alpha N splitters and kind.

Side note: are you back to stock wheels now?

Plug and play with the 19": switching back to my BBS around October for the winter season (actually, as soon as roads become a bit treacherous). Swapping to my summer setup again next Spring.

That's the secret of the trick: because some VO paint has been shaved off on the underside (culprit: a certain bloody curb I regularly got to negotiate), I have a fraction more ground clearance, as shown in the picture below (look careful and you'll see some black: VO missing - if there had been a splitter, the bumper would have been ripped apart at the contact points). So the bumper behaves like "une allumeuse": flirting with the obstacle, without kissing...
