125i - rear tail light not working. Is Service Action applicable?
Hi, based in Sydney have an e82 125i Coupe 2010 model (MY09), I assume out of warranty
The passenger side tail light (the LED strips) has gone out. I found this note on here saying there is a recall. Is BMW required to fix this without charge if out of warranty? BMW quoted me ~$350 to replace the single tail light. I shot them an email with this service action to see what they say.... SUBJECT Service Action: Replace Rear Lamps, or Replace Rear Lamp Seals MODEL E82, E88 (1 Series) up to October 12, 2009 SITUATION The seals on the rear lamps emit a gas that causes damage to the electrical connectors on the LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) inside the rear lamp. In some cases, the LEDs become inoperative. CAUSE Unsuitable seal material AFFECTED VEHICLES This Service Action involves E82 and E88 (1 Series) vehicles which were produced from August 20, 2007 to October 12, 2009. In order to determine whether a specific vehicle has had this Service Action completed or is affected by this Service Action, first check the B-pillar label for code number 564. If code number 564 has been punched out, the campaign has already been performed. If code number 564 has not been punched out, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action. CORRECTION Inspect both rear lamps and, depending on the result, replace the seals or the lamps on both sides of the vehicle. PROCEDURE Turn on the vehicle exterior lighting and check if the tail lights in both rear lamps are functioning correctly. If both tail lights are working, replace the seals on both rear lamps (a total of 4 seals). Before installing the new seals, fully remove the original seals and be sure that residue does not fall into the rear light. Refer to Repair Instruction REP 63 21 101 "Replace sealing frame for rear light on the left or right". No further work is necessary. If one or both tail lights are inoperative, replace both of the rear lamps (always replace both, even if only one tail light has failed). Refer to Repair Instruction REP 63 21 180 "Remove and refit/replace the rear light on the left or right". Dispose of the removed lamps in such a way so as to prevent reuse. PARTS INFORMATION Part Number Description Quantity 63 21 7 285 537 Seal repair kit 1 or 63 21 4 871 751 Left and right rear lamp repair kit 1 |

Looks like he is LCI if he has LED strips - they sell for about $300 a pair
Also depending where you found that service action/recall, US/Europe recall campaigns are very rarely carried out in Aus. |

OP is pre LCI. All pre LCI lights built before Jan, 2010 will fail. BMW had a service campain, not a recall on this. Meaning IF the tail light failed under warranty... bmw would replace both. Once the car went out of warranty... the customer ended up paying. LCI or LCI Black lines run about $300 to 350 for the pair. You can also pickup used pre LCI tail lights on this forum for $50 to $100 for the pair. Good Luck, Dackel Btw... Blacklines are LCI lights with a slight dark tint to them. BMW offers the LCI lights clear or slightly tinted. LCI = Left side... pre LCI on the right side... Blacklines...
