Manual tranny question

I just purchased a 330i in December and have about 1000 miles on it. I parked the car today and powered it off. I put the parking brake on and had the car in neutral. The car let me move the stick to 1st without pressing the clutch?? With the engine running the car does not let me move the stick. Is this normal?

Let me know. Thanks,
Andy

In a word, yes. If the engine is not running and the drivetrain is not in a bind you should be able to move the shift lever through all the gears without the clutch.

Yep, you can you go through the gears if the engine is off without using the clutch pedal. Actually, you can shift WITH the engine off without using the clutch pedal, if the revs are perfectly aligned. Don't do it though, it's not worth the risk.

Is this bad for the car? I dont plan on doing it, but I happened to notice it today for the first time. Sorry I am paranoid as this is my first manual. Im 99% certain I havent done anything to hurt the clutch.

Nah, I do it all the time. I like to sit in the passenger seat occasionally and pretend I have a right-hand drive car. I make the sounds and everything, WRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, OOOOOHhhh, perfect double declutching heel-toe downshifts everytime.

I just never thought that could occur without using the clutch. Is this the same on all cars? I love this car!

You haven't hurt the clutch. If you try to match revs while shifting without the clutch, you won't hurt the clutch though you might trash the transmission if you make a mistake.
