i bet it reduces the noise as it introduces more reflections within the muffler.

That's probably the main reason.

Maybe the exhaust is a cheap copy?

Seriously though, I suspect also that there maybe differing systems for china, which is not a huge surprise given there are some variances in the cars for different countries, US front indicators for example.

Maybe the chinese 2nd turbo is fake too
See post in China checked like this:
run highway with M mode. After stop the car, 2 mufflers are burning and 2 can touch with his hand.

Just cleaned mine and both are equally black. Used M button for a few seconds few times only. So should not be enough to create equal blackness.

From cars, really?!?! I expect more from a diplomat. China's air pollution woes are mainly from industy and not the automobile. They burn more coal than any other country in the world.

i am not saying any political issue here. Just try to answer the reason why. and might off the topic away. In fact that China has largest coal mine but lack of Oil. To dig Oil locally the cost is 7 times higher than Middleast. Even transport oil from middeleast, the cost is also much higher than NA. To avoid spend too much nuc-power station, they build the biggest dam on yangzhi river for Hydro power. Solar and wind power are very popular now. Clean energy can get rebate from government rather than coal burning power. Anyway too much people but limited resources. Another reason for birth control policy.

Why would using the M button affect exhaust emissions/carbon build-up?

I don't think it should. But I read somewhere in this thread that the M button opens the other two pipes. I don't think that may be the case so I was just confirming all four pipes were functional.

Sorry to put it wrong. I was in a hurry when I wrote that, I meant the cars are NOT the main reason, the industry is!

Thanks for clearing that up

It has to be a physical restriction I cant imagine they designed a different axle back with a valve and vacuum line thats somehow incorporated into the M button. Anything is possible but it seems like too much work and $$.

Whats the benefit though? As mentioned numerous times already it wouldnt impact emissions.

Maybe it's noise restrictions causing this? Very strange.

I call bullshit! Look at the last picture with the 4 tiny holes. It's a total photoshop and a bad one at that. If you're gonna cut and paste photoshop the picture to get people all worked up over nothing, you need to get a life. Notice the odd square in the upper left hand corner. They pasted that by accident. Also the area with the 4 holes is clearly photoshopped. Time to bring out the BAN stick and shut this down mods!

No. Last weekend I saw two non quad pipe exhaust species in Italy: one with mono pipe exhaust and another with duo pipe exhaust (quickly snapped a picture of each, because they're kinda special). Probably Akrapovič, no ?

And the ///M badge on the second one, was a sticker.

Probably from BMW M Performance, because it weighs less than the usual ///M badge (gets you better times at the race track).

although the photo has been taken is not good. But i don't think the guy who can buy 1M in CHina would cheating on this tiny things. I have the complete OEM exhaust after AK switch. I am planning to cut the OEM and video tape for evidence. I don't know u guys why just don't believe. What's intension to fool everyone here?

Before i am planning to cut my OEM one. I got the offical feedback from BMW China executive. He wrote the email to BMW headquarter to check this. The answer is Yes.
In order to meet Chinese government's noise level regulation, BMW did the modification for Chinese Spec 1M.

So i saved my OEM 1M exhaust.

Nope!

BJ1M, what do you plan to do with the OEM exhaust now? Remove the restrictions or create your own internal structure for better gas flow (like the stuff I posted in the other thread)?
