No... Esp if someone is going to cough up 10k over MSRP, the dealership would be IGNORANT to sell it for any less.

Many of us bought our 1'ers for significantly below MRSP and, in some cases, even below invoice.

But many of the first 1'ers to hit the US in 2008 went for significantly above MRSP.

Again, supply and demand.

So far, this whole dealer markup phenomenon seems to be relegated to the west coast.

More like specific to the part of the country where there is a lot of people with a lot of $ and IMHO a side-effect of this allocation scheme. There are probably some of those dealers in other parts of the country that are going to get one allocation and have no waiting list for it that will sell it at MSRP or less. While in CA (for example) there is a much higher density of people looking to buy one and the dealers probably have a waiting list twice the size of their allocation (or at the very least have received a lot of inquiries about the car know they will get only 2 to maybe 4 cars max) and therefore figure out they will be able to sell them with a markup.

I think the dealers (at least the sales managers) already know how many cars they will get for the year (though they may not know exactly when they will get them) and since they will get so few of them they are not taking much of a risk by asking initially for a large markup, if the car does not sale at that markup, it's OK! You just display it in your store window and let the average customer drool on it/dream they could afford it, it's like a billboard rather than gathering dust in a parking spot in the back of the lot. If someone bites at that price, great they make extra $, if no-one buys it at that price after 2-3 months then maybe you'll sell it for no markup, but in the mean time you're sitting pretty with the knowledge that you will sell that car in the end, you have the upper hand and there's nothing the customer can do about it...

BMW of San Francisco told me there may be a "premium" charged for the 1m, and i'm a returning customer. No way in hell i'm paying a dime over msrp

And BMW of SF isn't taking any deposits for their six allocations. That's right, no deposits. Their taking phone #'s down and I have a feeling when they get their first black 1M in about two weeks, it's going to be a auction style, who's got the most dough kind of deal. Weak.

Some dealerships in LA are doing a similar thing. 1st come 1st serve for a car spec'd their way.

.....10K over MSRP for Camero/Challenger when they came out. They were never in short supply. Sounds made up. I don't think he was bitching, but you do.

idk about the Camaro, but $10k over sticker was true on the first SRT8 Challengers.

Now that's funny. When she drove it off the lot it was worth 10K less.

I'm not buying one, so why would I be bitching? You're awfully sure of yourself. How would you know if a dealership in Colorado had their prices jackup on a Challenger. Colorado Dodge did just that. 10K mark up on the Challenger. They even stated that on the sticker.

Oh that's just sad.

Paying over invoice for any of those stupid domestic cars is just a display of what a huge sucker you are. If it's a GT500 Super Snake or ZR-1 or some other uber version in limited quantities, maybe.

Dont really see a problem with the dealer asking more than MSRP. If they think some fool will pay it then more power to them. Its not like they have the only 1M in the world available. If you dont like it than dont buy from them! If a dealer tried to sell me a car for more than list price I would simply walk away. There are many other BMW dealers that will negotiate a fair deal.

As far as I know, most dealers can get any car on another lot so you dont necessarily have to buy from the dealership with the car sitting there. Also, any brand new model sporty car will always be priced the highest at its launch and will come down as more units become available.

Sorry, supply and demand.
Blame BMW! They are the ones limiting supply.

It's annoying as a consumer to have to deal with this whole allocation thing and then to possibly get stuck paying a premium over MSRP. But it is a free market, after all, and I for one can't really blame a business owner for trying to sell their cars for maximum profit. Blame BMW for limiting production so severely after all the hype over an "entry-level M."

By the way, you should see what the ROW is being asked to pay for this thing...

When a car is unpopular in the marketplace, you expect the dealer to slash the price, so when it's popular, why shouldn't they raise it? That's supply and demand. Of course, there are other considerations for the dealer, such as generating goodwill, etc. But that's a balance for them to make - just cause they choose to risk alienating their customers, and take the quick profit, doesn't make it wrong.

And if you put a deposit down without an agreement, then you really can't hold them to a promised price, cause there's no contract. Without a contract, you could have walked away from the deal at any time, so why can't they?

Seems harsh, but that's how business is done, and that's what the law says.
