Will 128i be talked about as the "last man standing" among car guys?
Or will it be just a lesser BMW only for a 'fun fact' trivia?
Just ordered one, but it has been only less than two weeks and the waiting is killing me now. I am wondering if 128i will become a significant model (as the last car with a naturally aspirated I-6) when talking about the history of BMW in the future or it will be a car people barely remember that has existed. |

I imagine it will be similar to the e30 325i, to a slightly lesser degree. Nonetheless i don't let that bother me as i'm too busy enjoying my car.

I think it'll be the former for that very reason... The last of a dying breed.

I think it will continue to be sought after but more for being the first 1 Series. Let's be honest about this "last of a dying breed" thing, BMW engines are going to continue to get better. The inline six in the 128i is a great engine and the result of years and years of engine development but it will be old outdated technology that has been improved on, not dead but evolved. Ten years from now you are no longer going to want that engine but will want some current engine that will be lighter, more efficient, and likely more powerful. The e82 will be the first of the line, which I think will be more of what keeps values high. As the smallest lightest car this will almost certainly be a favorite of enthusiast for the forseable future. That is part of why BMW put "Year One of the One" around the start button. We will see though, there will be some that will look back on the inline 6 with nostalgia, maybe more than I think.

Don't hold your breath on any 1 series being 'collectible' other than the 1/M. For a car to be noteworthy to collectors is has to have some basic criteria:
* Limited production run * Exclusivity (Such as handmade, etc) * Set new standards in design, power, style, etc. * Have high enthusiast demand. * Racing heritage helps considerably. Modern BMW's that fall into that category...E30 M3. Z8. E36 M3 Lightweight. That's about it. |

Even though there were a ton 1 series made, not many were brought to the US, they seem rare to me. I don't think the 128i will be a classic, but they will be desireable.

The 128 is sweet driving car. It handles fine, the inline-6 has great torque even in low rpm's, and if one was wise (or able) enough to get a stick, that completes the driving experience.
I have no problem with a 135. It is everything the 128 is, with noticeably more oomph. If one needs the extra power, fine. To me, BMW has historically been about a balanced, entertaining driving experience. That's why I enjoy my 128, and have just ordered another. I'm just a bit suspicious of BMW's future direction. The electric power steering in their recent offerings have been hammered in the press. And, I wasn't ready for a turbo, not just yet. (Please humor me, I'm 60-ish!) I do not believe that the 128 will ever be a collector's car. I do believe that used 128s will be sought after by people who enjoy driving, for a handful of years down the road. Just my couple of pennies. |

Maybe the 1 series will be the last series with 'regular' power steering? That is more important to me than the inline 6... the turbo 4 was a blast in the 328 loaner I had during the recall (didn't like the car otherwise) to the point I wouldn't mind driving the 4 in the 1 series. But the 328 steering? I don't like the 'drive by wire' when it comes to steering - very sensitive makes it hard to fill a bong driving with yer knees on the wheel LOL
It may become an enthusiast car for folks into BMW (like the 2002) but 'classic' in the sense of a 1966 Mustang or '56 T-bird? Don't see it.

2013 or 14 may be the last year for the naturally aspirated BMW which is why, among other reasons, that I traded. Plus I hate turbochargers. I much prefer a supercharged engine like in the Jaguar or my old mini. There is nothing more satisfying than the whine of a supercharger running though the gears! You get the boost, no lag and none of the long term maintenance headaches. I never had a black car before, my first. I'm a bit nervous though about maintaining the finish but then again, I hand wash all my cars. I guess I could have the dealer detail it once a year. Ox

I have a black car now and I used Zaino products from day 1. My paint finish still looks brand new (or better). I used the base wax and dark color polish and could not be happier with how the finish looks.

I had a black car before my 1 series and I'll tell you what, not much beats a clean one. But boy are they hard to keep pristine.

I sure hope this car gets a following. The prices are already sub 20k for a used 2008 example w/o sport pack
