Intake valve carbon removal

I have seen several different diy's on this process and have a question:

One method involves radiator fan removal to gain access to allow for manual valve rotation (close valves prior to walnut blasting).

Another method involves removal of the head without regard to valve positioning with the understanding that the walnut medium will not cause any harm.

I would think the first method makes more sense.

My question, those of you that have had indy shops or dealers perform this task, which method do they perform?

I don't have an answer for you yet, but I plan on having my indy shop do this very soon. I will inquire what methods they use and report back.

Cylinder head stays on the engine. With the intake manifold off just turn the engine over by hand until the intake port you are going to clean valves are closed. I remove the spark plugs and install a TDC whistle so I know I'm coming up on the compression stroke and the intake valves are closed.
