1's Electric Steering? Why not?

I'm sorry but i can't seem to find anything in search.
But why was the 1 series not given electric steering?
Isn't it lighter and more accurate?

the ActiveE has an electric rack - it sucks, its vague, light, and has no feedback, night and day with my 135.

Conceptually I dont get why all electric steering systems are numb. Youre boosting the steering, either hydraulically or electrically. To means to the same end, so conceptually I dont understand why electric steering doesnt have the same feedback properties as hydraulic.

I recall reading rave reviews about the VW electric boosted steering...saved weight...reduced complications....and would learn from your driving and give you a few hp boost?

Having to deal with a few rentals lately, I can say that the first thing I hated in all of them was the steering. Too light, vague feedback, boring. I love the steering feel in the 1, makes me feel like I have more control of the vehicle.

I am not saying this as a fact, just what makes sense to me. But a hydraulic system is going to build pressure, however slight. An electric system is going to have no ramp up and maybe that is what makes it feel more disconnected?

or the back pressure....electrical systems don't really have back pressure.
I have a few friends who went from flying Boeing to Airbus and it took them a while to get use to the feeling of electric flyby wire systems and lack of feedback from the controls.

And i recall Airbus had to install some sort of feed back system to give the pilots some sense that they were in control. Just figured the car companies would have done the same?

Oh well thanks guys...it would have saved a few Lbs and some Hp

Boeing has now caught up to Airbus with their new models all being fly-by-wire. Airbus had haptic feedback in their sidestick controllers from the beginning. Although they are different in control placement (sidestick vs yoke) there seem to be as many Airbus proponents as Boeing these days.

This electric power steering issue is one of the reasons why I may consider trading in for a 2013 1-series, and not wait for the F22 cars. I would imagine that the F22 will have electric PS.

The current F30 had electric steering which is light but it's not the same feel as hydraulic version on e82. I had a loaner other day and did not like it.

Get behind the wheel of an F30 some time and you'll be thankful your E8x doesn't have electric assisted steering. Like others have said, it's vague and the 'sport mode' added weight feels extremely artificial, not to mention the normal steering weight is essentially Merc or Lexus light. It's perfectly accurate and quick, it just doesn't convey much back to the driver. A shame too, as I really liked almost everything else about the F30 when I last drove it.

No, only the 125i and below can have EPS(not all do).

EPS to me is the ruination of the sports car and a large part of the reason why I'm only looking backwards for a future car purchase.

If anyone has ever driven a Mazda recently, then you know EPS steering can be done right. My old Mazda5 had waaaaaaay better steering feel then the 1er (on RFT's).

The F30 has electric steering, and it's just fine. Not worried about it.

The hydrolic steering is my favorite part of the 135i....It's heavy percise ....Only the M3 so far has impressed me the same way. If they go electric it will certainly be a negative......I have driven quicker cars with quicker steering but there is something about the weight and balance of the 135i steering as it feels great WITHOUT having to feel every little nuance and road imperfection in the wheel like a STI or EVO and the car tracks great on center.....hold the line BMW on the 1 series and keep the steering as is.

Humans need tactile feed back to properly modulate. Imagine if we had a joy stick instead of steering wheel.

Every time a system is converted to FBW this issue comes up. It's way even game sticks needed feedback built in.

BTW. I have flown an AIRTRUCK. I hate it.

It was.

ALL the four cylinder E81/E87/E82/E88 cars have electric power steering, as do the post face-lift six cylinder 130i cars.

That's why every review of it says that it is feelingless now?
