Which exhaust makes the most sense?

Hey guys, this might be a really real noob/stupid/retard question but I never went with an aftermarket before so help me out here Anyway.... just wanted to know which exhaust makes the most sense to you guys if its just upgrading the exhaust and nothing else. I know a few designs are similar. I just want functionality too. Thanks.

This might be an opinionated discussion so I don't mind, I just wan to find the right one for me.

What are you looking to get out of the exhaust? I think aFe and Active make a perfect bolt on solution. The best advice I can give you is go out there and listen to as much as you can. One person's loud is another person's quiet. Most well designed systems will produce about the same power, the differentiators are price, sound, looks and quality.

Good advise given. Add the new Berk muffler axleback to your review list.

Here's my break down guys....

Stock- unique black tips, doesn't sound loud enough
BMW Performance- sounds alright, shiny tips and it's BMW
AA- looks great, but I can get the AFE which is the same for cheaper
AFE- a little too throaty sounding, cheap, doesn't look as good as the AA
Eisenmann- looks and sounds great/exotic, too expensive
Dixis- so nice with the ti, but also too expensive

Currently checking Japanese offerings....

I'm looking for something that won't drone over my music, looks nice (shiny), sounds exotic (not throaty), and not too loud or over $900.

I think it depends not only on the quality of sound, but also which parts of the exhaust system you intend to replace. Are you going for new downpipes, mid-pipes and axle-back, or just some combination of those? Personally, I liked the Meisterschaft sound best, cp-e was a close second, but the drone issue was out there still, unsatisfied to my way of thinking. With just an axle-back, at least you're in a better position (as I see it) regarding any warranty issues. Once you start removing cats, just hope you don't have an HPFP failure and a balky dealer, or as it appears now BMW NA moving away from replacing the pumps without a fight.

I love my maddad setup, zero drone, great materials/welds, not obnoxiously loud, and priced reasonably.

You'll be dropping some weight and gaining sound with an exhaust. I have the MadDad whisper but I'd think you should probably go with the louder, lighter, and better looking MadDad Street version.

If I were you, I would definitely check out the Maddad Whisper axle back (not too loud by itself) and Maddad mid-pipes. I am getting Maddad mid-pipes with my existing aFe, so I am expecting the combination to be loud.

Isn't the Eisenmann and the BMW performance exhaust one and the same? I thought I read somewhere the BMW performance exhaust come from Eisenmann..

jzhang, I think I'm on the same hunt as you right now. Worried that AFE might be a little annoying/loud. Don't want to spend a crap load.

Thoughts on Maddad?

Let me add, I preferred the Meisterschaft Touring HP over the rest (which I bought), cp-e was a close second, however, there is a question of drone, which has never been resolved to my satisfaction (at least with their mid-pipes). The Touring HP has an exquisite sound, but is certainly not loud; in fact, I'm thinking of adding some resonated mid-pipes to bump it up some. And although I didn't particularly rank the MadDad's axle-back sound that high, I'm certainly interested in their mid-pipes.

Sound quality (as well as volume) of exhausts is an individual taste, you just need to listen as many as you can (in person if possible) to see what you like and line that up with your budget.

I am a BIG fan of stock exhaust + catless downpipes. Most of the HP gains are made with downpipes, and it produces a slightly more aggressive tone without being annoying or droning.

They almost look identical so that's what I'm thinking too. I used to like CP-E then I started reading about drone and bad customer service?? Am I wrong??

One of the downsides to the stock axle-back is the weight, it's heavy. There was a considerable difference in weight between the stock and the Meisterschaft Touring I installed.

DPs have this horrible drone when first installed, but after a good few hundred miles of driving, you can't really tell the difference. DPS + stock exhaust FTW
