Kenny's E82 Daily Driver Project

Hey fellow Aussies!

Andrew from SouthernBM has encouraged me to keep a mini diary of my daily driver project so here it is!

I bought my E82 135 coupe in May, with the following specifications:

Model Code: UC72-30
Colour Code: 300 (Alpine White)
Trim Code: LWSW (Black Boston Leather) with patterned aluminium trim.
Build Date: 10/2008

Standard Options
3AP Grey band on Windscreen
337 M Sport Package
441 Smoker Package
459 Electric Seats
488 Lumbar Support
502 Headlight Cleaners
522 Xenon Headlights
534 Climate Control
6FL USB Audio
644 Bluetooth Preparation
663 Professional Radio
694 CD preparation

Extra Options
None

It was important to me to get a clean spec car with no sunroof or other heavy junk I don't need.

I found the car online and contacted the seller immediately. The car sounded good so I caught a flight from SYD to MEL the next day and bought it on the spot.

I had the car transported to SYD and went through the process of registering a VIC vehicle in NSW (which is onerous!). After swapping my personal plates onto the vehicle she was ready for her first spin around town!

Garage List
Tarantino moment-
Joe: Mr. Brown, Mr. White, Mr. Blonde, Mr. Blue, Mr. Orange, and Mr. Pink.
Mr. Pink: Why am I Mr. Pink?
Joe: Because you're a ******, alright?

[rubbing his thumb and forefinger together]
Mr. Pink: Do you know what this is? It's the world's smallest violin playing just for the waitresses.

Mr. Pink: I mean everbody panics, everybody, things get tense, it's human nature to panic, I don't care what you name it you just can't help it.

Mr. Brown: [after Joe assigns names] Yeah, yeah, but "Mr. Brown"? That's little too close to "Mr. Shit".
Mr. Pink: Yeah, "Mr. Pink" sounds like "Mr. Pussy". Tell you what, let me be Mr. Purple. That sounds good to me. I'm Mr. Purple.

That aside - congrats on the buy and I look forward to seeing what you do to your car. I went with a minimalist spec like you for the same reasons.

First Mod: Window Tinting

The day after my new coupe arrived in early May I took it over to Tint-A-Car Five Dock and had their darkest legal tint ("Formula 1") applied. Great service there and three hours later the car was looking good with the tint contrasting against the Alpine White paint.

Formula 1 tint.

Second Mod: Procede piggyback

Today I had the Procede installed by Adrian. No fuss, no hassle, what a fantastic guy and product, would recommend to any potential purchaser! I'll post more observations after a little time has passed and I can give more thorough feedback.

I'll also be posting dyno sheets with Procede in valet (passthru) mode and then in the "on" mode for comparison on the same dyno machine on the same day. I hope to give potential purchasers a bit of empirical data to help make decisions.

Matty: Madonna's "Like a Virgin" is a metaphor for big dicks. Thanks, although this is my daily driver I still wanted to avoid too much heavy crap to reduce performance and I have never been into sunroofs!

Andrew: Thanks so much for your extensive advice and experience, it's really appreciated. I only wish we were in the same state! Southern BM is the place to go for 135 enthusiasts!

Michael: Thank you, my 1999 BMW M Coupe street/strip car is a whole other kettle of fish! This E82 will be far more tame because I want daily driver reliability and comfort! I'm determined that everything on this car will be bolt on, no custom fabrication!

Third Mod: BMW accessories
I got the snapin adaptor for iPhone and the iPod cable to work in my non-iDrive car. Took a bit of fiddling to work out how to priority pair the phone and the best way to navigate the iPod using the radio controls but I've got it sussed now.

I heartily recommend to everyone with an iPhone and an E82 to get the snapin adaptor. It charges your iPhone and you get better reception through the car's antenna. I certainly listen more to music in my car with an iPod than anything else; I never listen to radio and I couldn't be bothered with CDs in the car. I'm not big on car stereo so the base system is fine for my needs.

My overall evaluation of these accessories: Must haves but obviously overpriced for what they are.

Hi Mate... I see you have decided to go down the Procede Track... I am curious to wonder why you decided this??? I am coming from a Evo and WRX modification background and normally its recommended to use a ECU Flash not a piggy back. As I am new to learn more about BMW modification who can install Procede in Sydney.. its a shame Southern BM is not in Sydney!

Upcoming mods
I placed an order for the 3D Design aluminium pedal set (including dead pedal) with WSTO the same day I bought the car.

Aluminium pedal kit for RHD including dead pedal.

I also ordered the BMW Performance black kidney grilles and the full carbon fibre interior trim kit from BM Mini Parts in the UK on the same day. All these parts are sitting in cardboard boxes in my home office right now. I recommend Toby at BM Mini Parts. The cost was a quarter of what BMW Australia quoted me and fast delivery.

I got a replacement clutch delay valve from Zeckhausen Racing.

CDV replacement part.

Recently I ordered some gear from the USA: the boltin half cage from Bruce at BRRacing, exhaust from CP-E, Downpipes and Oil Catch Can from Andrew at AR Design, plus the full intercooler and chargepipe kit from Fred at Evolution Raceworks.

Exhaust system from downpipes back.

Intercooler and Chargepipe kit.

Downpipes and Oil Catchcan.

Finally Adrian at Vishnu Australia is ordering in a Methanol Kit.

Will update this thread as these goodies arrive and are installed on the car and I will include photos.

Matt I had a look at the various tuning options available over a few weeks, asked some questions of various people, did a fair bit of research and made up my own mind. There are several good tuning solutions.

Everyone should make up their own mind based on their specific wants and needs.

For the Procede contact Adrian who frequents this forum [adrian@vishnu]. He supplied and installed the Procede on my car in 15 minutes and then spent an hour discussing the setup with me. Nothing is too much trouble for Adrian, he's a gentleman and an expert in Procede, I couldn't recommend him more highly.

You're dead right about SouthernBM and Andrew, it's a damn shame he's based in MEL but good luck to the Victorians on the board for having such easy access to an enthusiastic and knowledgeable E82 tuner!

Look forward to reading more about your project and good luck with selecting a tune.

Mate, mind me asking how much the grilles and interior trim cost? That website is a nightmare to navigate!

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your kind words Kenny. Meth kit is here!! Andrew just installed one, and the car is a beast. Can't wait to try it out.

I also can't speak highly enough of Andrew. You Melbourne guys are very lucky to have the most knowledgable and passionate N54 workshop in Australia, and I would high recommend people in other states contact him when considering mods, as he can probably arrange to get parts to you and recommend a local fitter that can do a great job with his support. He also know the Procede better than anyone else in Australia (bad me!! ) and we talk often.

Raz0s, my backround is WRXs and EVOs. My other car is a fully track prepped 98 WRX. I have tuned many EVOs including the quickest local club sprint EVO9 of a few years ago. I know these cars backwards, and if anything I have a bit to go in my N54 knowledge compared to them as I have done everything you can do with the EVO/WRXs.

The ECU platform is very different in the BMW. For a start, flash tuning is very time consuming in the BMW. Currently it can only be done by specialist workshops who pay alot for the capability. Each time you reflash takes a long time (30+ minutes), so custom tuning (which requires alot of trial and error) is time consuming and expensive. So that leaves only off the shelf solutions. Off the shelf solutions seem OK for people looking for a mild increase in performance, but generally the piggy back tunes have proven to be of higher performance as proven by dyno, ET results and seat of the pants. Alot of the algorithms in the stock ECU are just not up to high boost levels, so just retuning the flash does not provide great results. I would recommend that anyone after a no fuss low to medium power upgrade consider flash tunes and piggybacks, but anyone looking for medium to high level upgrades can really only consider the piggyback.

I can also say that atleast in the case of the product I peddle, it is far more advanced than what you have seen in piggybacks on the EVO/WRX platform. Piggybacks from those platforms date back 10+ years, and since the free flash tuning (rom raider etc.) became available for that platform, piggybacks stopped progressing. The Procede does so much more and has so much more integration with the stock DME (ECU) in the N54 platform that it can achive alot more in terms of tuning. With the Procede we achieve great tunability to be able to provide great performance with excellent engine safety. It is always evolving with more and more features and improving drivability and performance.

Cheers,

Adrian

Michael yes the website is a bit difficult to navigate but I persisted and eventually got it all sussed. My order was successful and there were good savings.

Bearing in mind the prices for supply change often and the exchange rate AUD-STG changes daily I'll list the buy prices below:

+ 51 71 0 441 920 Front grille, black high gloss, right, BMW-Performance 21.24 STG
+ 51 71 0 441 921 Front grille, black high gloss, left, BMW-Performance 21.24 STG

Regarding the interior trim, it depends on if your car is an iDrive vehicle or not so check with the supplier and provide your VIN plus a description (like RHD, no iDrive, etc).

Example:
+ 51 16 0 442 909 Carbon Fibre ashtray finisher 24.79 STG
+ 51 16 0 442 908 Carbon Fibre centre console cover 140.44 STG

Then remember you need to add shipping and any customs duty or GST on top. Or not.

Tuning Stage 1

The Procede computer has three modes: valet mode which is a passthru mode (stock performance), map 1 and a more aggressive map 2.

I had my tuner do a power run on valet mode and map 2 before fitting any of the aftermarket boltons to get some baseline data.

Stock 135 coupe performance.

My 135 made 187.9 rwkw (252 rwhp) in the valet mode ~ stock on the Dyno Dynamics machine.

Procede Map 2 135 coupe performance.

My 135 made 234.1 rwkw (314 rwhp) on Map 2 on the same Dyno Dynamics machine, same day.

Evaluation of mod: Procede Map 2 135 coupe performance.

Ever wondered why your 135 felt stronger in the midrange after you added a Procede computer? Check out the difference in the stock and Map 2 curves above!

The peak numbers show an increase of 46.2 rwkw (62 rwhp). Relatively cheap horsepower gains and a massive area under the curve which you really feel in the seat of your pants.

Next will be adding the boltons and then another power run to see what performance changes they make.

Nice Kenny.

I am predicting this car will go very close to or over 300kW ATW with the mods planned.

Cheers,
