Mid Pipe Install Questions...

Ok, pu'd a set of CP-E midpipes. Problem is the y-pipe to the rear section won't tighten any more and leaks. The ypipe seems to have a built in nipple/flare that acts as a crush ring? Am I missing some sort of special crush ring for the same? I've got the springs b/w the flanges completely compressed, and I can tell where the PO had the pipes fastened to the ypipe and I got more pipe (ie, it's already pushing further back). On gas, it sounds ok, but obviously leaks, as idle, it's like someone blowing the edge to a piece of paper with light throttle - kind of annoying...

You probably need to put the original donut gasket back on. It is part #2 in the drawing below:

The part number is 18117553130 but it runs $33 so hopefully you still have it attached to your old exhaust. It looks like half of a donut. Just carefully slide it off the old and slide it on the new.

Yes, it is mid-pipes to BMW performance exhaust. I'll try to take it down and squeeze the crush donut in, but unlike stock y-pipe or BMW perf y-pipe, the single outlet to the axle back does have a fixed OD pipe, it is flared like a crush gasket that fills the receiving end of the rear section. There is no pipe to hold a gasket in place, other than just to squash in between the two and hope for the best??

That sucks. Metal on metal never makes a good seal. Hopefully the gasket will help things out.

of course don't forget the ol copper exhaust gasket maker as well. that thing works many wonders and will conform nearly to any surface.

on a side note, very interested in how this sounds. I was considering this very setup as I think the performance exhaust is too quiet.

You might try some aluminum muffler repair tape.
