128 Diff Pumpkin Versus 135 Diff Pumpkin
To those who are fairly knowledgeable on differentials for the 128/135.
I realize that the 128 has a rear end of 3.32 versus the 135 which is 3.08. That is why there is a variation in part numbers. However, does anyone know if the pumpkin (or diff casing) is the same size for each? Reason I'm asking, is that OS Giken and other companies offer clutch style LSDs to the 135 and not the 128. If there is no other difference other than actual final drive...theoretically we should be able to use 135 LSD offerings. Right now we are restricted to torsen type LSDs As well, in addition, does our diff pumpkin match the same size of older BMWs that were offered LSDs from factory (like E30s and early E36s? they both have the same ring gear size). Ideally, the cheap solution would to be using one of those LSDs in our cars. Thanks in advance, |

I don't think it shares dimensions with older BMW diffs, but frankly I'm out on a limb here. For the e82 Quaife offers two different diff covers, one of which works for the 6MT 128i. This definitely implies there is some variance out there.
We really need to get Harold from HP in here. |

BMW diffs are 3 sizes, measured by the ring gear outer diameter:
168mm = most 4 cylinders 188mm = most 6 cylinders 210mm = V8s or bigger, some M3s Both the 128 and 135 have 188mm ring gears BTW, the 128 manual ratio is 3.23, not 3.32.

Thanks a ton! Now just gotta narrow down which will be best for my build. Perfect too, don't need to worry about installing the chunk and I can just throw it up into the car. Good as well they offer 3.23 (yes I mistyped in the OP). It is required to maintain stock ratio for SCCA STX Autocross Looks like 2 clutch or 3 clutch would be the best bet to go with. Opinions?
