135i...Cult Vehicle???

Do you think the 1 series will ever qualify as a cult vehicle?

Way too early to say. It's uniqueness lies in its small size and relatively powerful motor. The replacement (probably a 2 series) has every indication (to me) of being a 4 cylinder car. Some automotive publications say it will be a 6, but that is speculation. If no 6 cylinder replacement is built, the chances for cult status are improved. Remember, not every cult car was a big seller.

I agree that cult status requires that rare mix of relatively low sales volume combined with a great / unique car. I think the original Z3 based - M Coupe qualifies. The 3 series is much too popular to ever be considered a cult vehicle, but I think the 1 series stands a chance. Especially if the new version is 4 cylinder only.

Name some cult vehicles. I think most of the ones that come to mind are cars that the general public ignored or disdained, but that found a passionate, quirky following. I would say the 1 is too good to be a cult vehicle. I think it will be considered (in certain versions) as a classic, like the 2002.

Cult Vehicle? Sure, in about 10yrs or so, when a rear wheel drive*sporty* vehicle would be pretty hard to find (it seems everything is going front wheel drive for the Eco's)..........then the 1er will shine like one of those gold bricks that you see at the Fort-Knox depository

Low sales volume is not a requirement. Lots of 1965 Mustangs were sold and they are cult cars if one ever was. Scarcity results from time.

Don't we all worship the E82 here? I do...

We are a cult.

And I definitely think in 10-20 years, this car will be seen as one of the best our year/generation/era had to offer.

I don't know about the 135i. Most definitely the 1M.

I don't think so. The car is not universally liked. Most reviews bash the looks of it, (sagging mid section). Not to mention the understeer issues.

Liking this car is like rooting for the underdog. Especially given the rave reviews the e92 gets.

I think if this car was 200-300lbs lighter and had was more racing oriented, it could have been something that would be highly sought after.

Excellent driving car, in relative short supply, with some great reviews. It's a true old school BMW, but I don't know much about the "cult" stuff.

To all the folks who think that the 1M will be a cult classic, but not the 135i, think about this: the 1M is hard to get NOW, and it's still in production. While I have no doubt it will be seen as the pinnacle of the 1 Series, I think there will be enthusiasts who "settle" for a 135i, or even a 128i. Similar to the way that the 2002 Turbo is the most desirable '02, but most enthusiasts, because of cost and scarcity, are restoring 2002tii's or plain old 2002's. BMW fans seem to revolve around platform, and I think the E82's combination of low sales volume, polarizing styling, and great engines will work together to make it a desirable car to own in the future. It's really sort of an iconic little BMW, I think.

I think my sparkling graphite metallic E82 N54 6MT sounds more and more like a keeper

I didn't "settle" for my 135i. I think it's a hell of a car!

Yes! Why? Because of rear drive/6 cylinders/turbo. That's why!

Dunno.

Interesting article about cult cars. http://editorial.autos.msn.com/artic...umentid=434627

I think one quote sums it up.

Quote:
It hits people in the gut, where they say, `I've got to have one of these and I will keep it forever.'
I'm still undecided about the 135, in that regard. After a day at the track, and a long road trip this weekend, it is starting to look like a long-term keeper. I will almost certainly keep the e46 forever. One man does not make a cult following, though.

Why does it matter if it is or isnt?

All that matters is if you love it and keep it forever.

And on that note I probably will. There are more 1M Coupes than there are 08 135 verts
