they do need to drop the front overhang and make the car less nose heavy....

And here's a great idea - SOFT TOP convertible - drop some fat; those soft tops are high quality these days.

It's actually considerably cheaper to lease a Z4 35i than even a regular Boxster.

I miss my old 986, but I'm not going to pay e93 M3 money for a Boxster.

The Z4 is a great cruiser you said it perfectly, while the boxster really is not.

But the Boxster is more fun to drive spiritedly.. yet it's still a damn soft-top
If the boxster had a hard top, I'd consider it even if it cost a bit more than a Z4..but a soft top is useless.

I've owned a couple difference verts for the past 4 years, and I will never own another soft top vert as my primary car.

I disagree.... too noisy, doesn't look as nice, older technology. only reason we got a SLK before the Z4 was the e85 was a soft top

I also think the hard top is great and the current Z4 has the best looking among all the so call roadster. I think BMW can make the Z4 lighter, may be use the carbon-fiber technology of the i series.

The beautiful looking of the current Z4 should be maintained. Otherwise, Z4 will go back to the 1st generation Z4 which was, sorry I have to say, ugly.

The design is great, aggressive with M Sport but its weight is a little bit too much.
It's good to maintain the hard top, but it should be made using more aluminium/CF

Put a soft-top back on it, and I will buy one because I will fit again.

And build a Coupe'

They need both just like Porsche has the Cayman and the Boxster.

BMW needs to stop monkeying around with so many new product variations & start making ONE halo car, mid engine rear wheel drive.
Im sure there's a market for it if they price it around or a tad higher than the M6's.

Sales numbers have been lacking, because of price. It is very easy to spec out a 35i in mid $60k. That just is too much for that car. I remember end of last year, BMW had insane lease deals on the Z4.

The styling is fantastic, there is no questioning that.

lol, so true.

But really BMW should put a soft top back on and have a fixed-roof version as well. Bring the price back down. Then later reintroduce a Z4M.

I believe that you all are smoking crack of some sort bashing Z4.

Nice good looking machine out there. Ultimate driving machine is the balance of all of the properties. Compared to all of these new cars, my e36 m3 racecar is still better handling monster, but does it mean it is overall a better car?

Z4 is a nice package, especially with the I4 engine.

Have you seen the top on the new 6er, new boxster?? It's impressive. But I guess it's personal opinion.

We are thinking as enthusiasts and not as company men trying to make a profit. The current Z4 is probably the sportiest car that 90% of the owners have ever driven. So, while I applaud the tone of this article, I think its unlikely that the next z4 will be that much different than the current offering. I think BMW has enough room in their lineup to make the m-sport and M models the ultra sporty models.

disclaimer: this purely comes from the bean counting, devils advocate portion of my brain. The real me wants real sports cars.

The Original Z4 was more a competitor towards Porsche boxter than the excisting Z4 is.
Why, because the former was supposed to be it's main rival, and build accordingly.
Now the excisting Z4 however, things were different.
This time around they targeted the SLK as it's main rival, making it less sporty, but more stylish, elegant and refined, hence the roof, and no true M model.

I thought the Z2 was supposed to be the miata/boxter killer?
What BMW needs thought is something SL'ish.
The 6 is not it, BMW needs some more uber premium convertible's!

I love the new Z4, but it is terribly overpriced. There is no way I would pay 70k for the highest trim level Z4.

I really hope BMW is not trying to cover its tracks on less sales by blaming how the car drives. Price it reasonably.

Actually the current Z4 performs better with the hard-top down because it places more weight to the rear giving it better balance.

I've driven the new 6, top down and up.

It's noisy IMO.

Top down the 6 looks beautiful... top up... I'm not a fan. I would consider a 6 after my e93 M3 but not if it's a soft top

I haven't driven the new boxster with the top up (did it with the top down).

My old boxster was too loud with the top up, as was the e85 and the S2k.

SLK E89 E93 are quiet and perfect IMO.

Same with how people view some BMW's - you have to own the upper model of the series, if not why even bother. Like someone said above, it's just icing on the cake with all the rave reviews of the new Boxster chassis.
I have a 135i and a Cayman, so I know what great cars both companies make. The problem with the Z4 is they are trying to tick too many boxes, hence the whole doesn't quite work. The reason that Porsche makes the Boxster/Cayman twins is it is the only way to please sports cars enthusiasts overall. The Boxster is an incredible roadster, but those that don't want canvas overhead, and want the real driver's car then the Cayman is the only way to go, a fixed roof weighs less and adds structural rigidity. The Z4 is trying to accomplish both and ends up with a car that weighs too much, has a suspension that isn't quite sporty and handling that is lacking. As to steering feeling, unfortunately we are going to have to get used to that, even Porsche has gone electronic with the latest 911, Boxster and Cayman (next year). The only grace is that Porsche has dialed in the settings a bit better, but electronic power steering is never going to let you feel exactly what position those wheels are in (sigh)

I've driven the Z4 and the sad experience is that a Mazda Miata is more "fun", not as fast, you don't get the acceleration exhilaration, but tooling around the twisties is a riot. *(If I wanted a fun roadster at this point I would buy a boxster, if I couldn't afford that, then a Miata, A Z4 would be a distant 3rd and a TT at the bottom (I just can't get the feeling for an AWD sports car, even less so for a FWD one)

It's still offered with a manual tranny and the roof is already aluminum along with the hood. What would be a lighter alternative? CF would just make it go up in price.

The Z4 lost a lot of its everyday practicality when they got rid of the Z4-coupe. It had a large boot easily accessible with a rear hatch. It was a lot easier to live with on a day to day basis, as your only vehicle. I bet a lot of people would be driving a N54 powered Z4-coupe, if it existed.
