We have over 100,000 on our 135. We did not extend the warranty, only service, and did not have any repairs except for two sensor replacements after the 50,000 mark. Extending the warranty for thousands of dollars would have been a total waste of money for us.

No matter what you decide, make sure you are getting coverage for what you think you are getting coverage for. Knowing what is not covered is as important as what is covered.

And FWIW (in response to the OP's comment about a G35), my mom's G35 needs a new repair every other week. And she drives it like you'd expect somebody's mom to drive.

It's just a crapshoot. Don't read too deeply into the fact that your G35 was reliable and somebody's 135i wasn't. You can't make any judgements based on a handful of data points, especially because of the selection bias.

I meant the part about $15,000 for airbags, $6000 for seat belts, $6000 for wheels. Seems a bit of an exaggeration, doesn't it?

You could always refinance it with a credit union and roll it in to your loan. My CU offers this so maybe yours does too.

No, an exact quote from the BMW shop! Airbags should have never deployed, but they did, so they needed to replace basically the entire system, seatbelts- most don't realize, and that was my second 135 and I didn't either, the seatbelts have a gas charge which is deployed during airbag deployment or any other impact worthy, they sinch up and pull you back into the seat to avoid getting battered by airbags and other injury,,,a really good thing if you are traveling at high speeds, BMWs are awesome in a crash. But!!! they can only be used once, not just the seatbelts but the seatbelt system itself, most dealers do not have them in stock, they oreder them from BMW,,,hence the huge cost! Rims,,,,1500 per rim,,, a little more than what I could find from BMW but then again I couldn't find the exact same rim either, no exaggeration is my point and my relevance to the OP is this,,,BMW is soooooooo overpriced,,,heck they charge 150 for the BMW performance sticker on the side, its a decal,,,nothing more,,,,get a warranty and good insurance was my point. Not my first forum, been around in 47 years, so Im used to the bash the guy that has less post than you do, even though I have never been that guy! But BMW forums seems to have way too many of them guys,,,jeez!

The warranties sold after 50K might be questionable to begin with. Doubly so if from a Ford dealer selling a BMW. The cost of one would have to account for "adverse selection" (meaning people wait till something breaks to get one) so it'd be really expensive if it actually covered much.

I'd take the money and bank it for a rainy day. Short of the engine/transmission exploding, you should be ok.

Agree with the posters who say extended warrantys are a racket. My plan is what has been suggested, put some money in a savings account just in case. It'll earn interest for you and if you don't use it, put it towards your next vehicle purchase. Much better keeping your money rather than giving to somebody else.
