I have a drop in AFE Pro Dry air filter. Did not notice any additional growl.

My favorite effect from my aFe intake. Additional growl will come from an aftermarket exhaust. The BMW PPK tune helped increase the exhaust burble for me. I just wish my Berk exhaust didn't muffle it so much. |

My experience with open cone intakes is that higher up in the rev range i.e. when you're giving your car hell (and you have a decent cold air feed throwing air right at it), the engine feels less restricted and more willing to keep going however, when sitting in traffic, doing 30mpg/low rev it has no benefit at all; I'd even go as far as saying that the car felt more laggy and less responsive.
I can't say that the OE N54 intake is bad at all, it seems to be the best of both worlds for street driving. I'd probably only consider some scoops for it but that's a whole other arguement . |

Funny thing with the filter talk its like when people talk oil .... I've ran a DDM foam filter thats ported to the outside air in my MINI cooper S the day I got it 11 years ago and over 200,000 miles on it, don't like these hot air intakes, makes no sense. the car sees very aggressive driving and some track time and still does not burn oil and I get excellent vacuum and still original drive train and motor. Bought it for the looks and sound from the super charger, Im Just crazy on upkeep. But not everyone keeps a car for over 200,000 miles so as far as reduced engine life if at all with a foam or any other oiled filter its probably negligible. Again this is just my experience with these filters on my cars past all with over 100,000 miles driven. I drive a lot
So some cars it may help but very little I have the foam filter because I can clean it and never have to buy another filter again. Your car your choice but don't have any fear that you will grenade your motor if you do put a drop in filter. |
