LSD arrived, work underway
When I saw the package, I was a little shocked at first because I'm used to working on large domestic diffs, and something this size seems... fragile.
It's an M Factory helical unit, which I got on a 20% off sale... couldn't pass up the price. It appears to be well made, with high quality FKE 12.9 fasteners (taiwan). Machine work and final finish is very nice. Anyway, got the old diff out, and will open it up and install this tomorrow, since I spent all my strength and willpower getting off the stupid driveshaft nut today (not fun). Last autox of the season is this weekend, so have to make sure I'm ready.

No kidding. Nice looking piece and I agree, expected it to look more robust. Keep us updated!

Final backlash is .004-.008 depending on point on gear measured, indicating either the gear (most likely) or lsd isn't perfectly round. I'm satisfied that is is not too tight, however, and that's the important thing. Don't get too hung up on this if you're doing it yourself - the pinion is fixed since we haven't touched it. As long as the gear pattern is good, you arent going to hurt anything.

Wow, it's like driving an entirely different car... especially around tight corners on the throttle and from a stop. No more e-diff intervention, amazing. Cant wait for saturday's autox.
It's also silent, so I must have set it up right. Winning.

Used an atv axle nut wrench. Total cost, $12, and forged steel. No overpriced 'bmw tool' crap.

I wish MFactory would be put out comparable specs on their diff so I can figure how it stacks up against alternative options. I ALSO want to hear more of your opinions on the performance, so get to driving!

Plan to do the same, bought mine for $7 off ebay. Just hope MFactory sends my diff soon, month delayed so far.

It's definitely a night and day difference vs not having the LSD. We finished 12th/13th (me and codriver) out of 60+ today. Would have placed in the top10, but borked my 2 good runs on cones. Have to re-learn how to drive the car, it's that different. I will say it's significantly faster, especially on corner exits and tight turns. Very highly recommend.

We run in ASP. The car's pretty well sorted at this point, just undersprung with the 135 swift spec-r kit. I might step up to a full coilover next year so I can run the spring rates I need to compete with the top guys. Might also just give the M3 front spec-r springs a go, since they're 275 lb/in instead of 201 of the 135 kit.

In a rough sense, its the distance/free space between the ring gear and the pinion gear measured at the driven gear tip. Its adjusted by the pinion crush sleeve on the pinion, and less directly by the bearing c-clip sizes on the ring gear which do effect it, but have a greater effect on the gear pattern.

I know this thread is a bit old but, I installed my LSD from MFactory. Wonderful place to work with and very good support. Helped me out in a big way when one of my bearing fell apart on dis-assembly. Had the new one's the next week! Unreal deference from that crappy EDiff. Great quality and the unit bolted right in...
