squealing brakes
Hi folks,
Had brakes pads and disks (fronts) changed at a reputable workshop in Melbourne last year, well they started to squeal. Because I'm in Sydney can't come back for re-assessment Called the place - was told that if the car wash I take my car to uses ?acidic wheel cleaning products that is the reason for the squeal who knows Took my car to the stealers - they insist the squealing is because the pads aren't genuine BMW The workshop says they are OEM squaling is driving me nuts - at slow speeds, in car parks etc, constant, does go away at speed and does not seem to affect braking Any suggestions?

I'm not sure about 125i's but 135i brakes squeal all the time. It's almost not normal if they don't squeal and BMW don't do shit about it.
There are a couple things you can try before you give up though. Sometimes it's due to dust buildup and spraying the pads with water can dislodge it and it will stop squealing, though it usually comes back after a short while. Second and probably better option would be to apply a brake quiet grease to the back of the pads. Shop should have done it but maybe they didn't use enough or whatever.

Go do a bed in procedure and see what happens.
i.e firmly brake (no abs) from 100kmh to 20kmh repeatedly until the pads are pretty much smoking. http://www.stoptech.com/technical-su...-system-bed-in |

Mine used to squeak, 2 dealer visits didn't fix it. It went away after my rotors got replaced under warranty (for a separate issue).

There is a product available from Supercheap or Autobarn called Desqueak. It is a spray can and is like a grey paint undercoat. Simply spray onto your rotors, let dry then drive and apply brakes to rub it off. Voila! Squeal gone. The brake places use it to avoid people coming back with squealing brakes. A mechanic mate of mine put me onto it. When I replaced my pads on my MINI with track pads this is what we used. And they squealed like a banshee before use. Take your wheels off to apply. Careful of overspray coz I'm not sure if it sticks like paint when dry.

OE parts are BMW parts.
OEM are parts from a supplier who makes OE parts for BMW. They are NOT the same. Similar, yes. But not the same. I recently replaced my front brake pads with ATE pads. While they are made in Germany, they don't stop the car like BMW pads. I will be getting BMW brake pads soon. Once your factory pads are about 60% worn down... they will start to squeal. It's by design to let you know its time for new brakes. Gennerally on 135i's when the front brakes are worn out so are the rears. I think this is bc of the e-diff always working so hard with all the power we put down.

Yeah mine squeal like a bitch as well but they are about 10k off needing full replacement which fits with Dackelone's explanation. But they stop really well so I'm happy to put up with the squeal.

had my 125i for 5 years and no squeal. All started when brake pads and disks were changed on the fronts. Rears still have plenty of meat. Why would OEM brake pads squeal I have no friggin idea. Shelling out for OE BMW on top of recently replaced pads and disks shits me to no tomorrow

i had my replaced my rotors and got Cool Carbon pads - mine squeak like a mouse getting done over by a rat!
Driving me insane at the moment. I live on a dirt road, so don't know if that is making things worse. People look when they hear the squeak and think, he doesn't look after his car........ |

When I had my 135 they squealed all the time at low speeds.
I just couldn't be bothered so learned to live with it. My new car is quiet as a mouse! |

Odd, how everyone has a different result for similar pads.
My 135 had 28k Kms with original brakes when sold and never squealed. The 1M has 22k Kms on original brakes and also no squeal. Touch wood. Comes down to different driving conditions and applications I guess. |

Brakes squeaking due to glazing on pads and un even surface pads contacting the disc rotor.
If you can be bothered, pull the pads out and sand the pad surface and get your rotor machined. Other wise just but new Rotors and pads. When new action taken, brakes has to re-bed in (be gental and not cook them) All those anti sqeal has never worked for me, comes back when the film rubs off. |
