Part # for the m-sport black leather shift knob?

Tried doing a search and couldn't come up with it. Is there a good place online to buy oem parts besides circlebmw?

Bought my leather m six speed from bimmerbum.com. Just e-mail Ed Mckernan at bimmerbum@hotmail.com and ask him to send you the weighted short shifter knob. Ask for some photos. I paid 63.99 plus $8 shipping. It's on eof the best interior upgrade you can do. I hated the stock knob. It is too tall! :rocks:

Is it a weighted knob? Not looking for that, just the stock black leather m knob that comes with the m-sport package for ROW customers.

I think obLu is referring to this shift knob from the M-sport E90. Try contacting dtmpassion, he's a retailer over in Germany and can get parts from BMW there.

I bought mine from the parts department of the dealership when I picked up my car a couple of weeks ago. I have the box in front of me now and am reading from the label. The part number on this one is 25 11 7 896 886 and it says "Gearshift Knob M 6SP Short". Maybe the same knob for the E46, which my knob is, has a different part number. At any rate, I can highly recommend the weighted knob; it seems to smooth out the shifts noticeably.

xyz, What dealership in TO ? I assume most would have access to the part, so I guess its a silly question.

More importantly, how difficult is it to switch out the stock shifter for the weighted knob ?

I think how easy or difficult it is to change knobs varies from car to car. I think most of them pop off quite easily. On my E46, I changed from the OEM wood knob to a BMW accessory chrome short knob to a Whalen Shift Machine and back to the original knob with no problems before trading the car in for the E90. On the other hand, the knob on the new E90 was frozen on and I could not remove it myself nor could the parts guy. The service department put the M knob in for me at no charge but I did not watch them do it. I have no idea how they got it off, maybe they have Arnold Schwarzeneger working there part time. I looked at the inside of the original knob after it came off and it appears to be slightly damaged so it might be that either the specification of the fit between the knob and lever is poorly chosen by BMW or the OEM knob or lever is out of spec on my car. There is a split plastic collar on the inside of the knob that is supposed to flex and snap into a groove on the lever; at the top of the hole in the knob there is a horizontal bar that fits into a slot on the lever and correctly orients the knob when it is pushed home.

I generally don't mention commercial businesses by name in public forums so will send you a personal message with the name of the dealership.

I contacted Mr. Ed and he is now asking for $80. He said the weighted short shifter knob is discontinued in the US and he only has 2 left. Sounds like a high price and a odd story to me.

This is the knob for the E46 but you say you got it on the E90? I can get this knob for 55.00 USD

I'm sorry to hear that...I dont buy that BS either. I looked into my knob and I cant find the part numbers but here is a pic and someone might let us know what the part number is. I'm sure it is available in some dealership.

That looks like the e46 one. Definately different than the picture posted above.

The E46 knob will indeed fit the E90. If I remember correctly, the 2002 and maybe the E21 had a screw-in knob but starting with the E30, I believe all 3 series shift knobs are interchangeable.

It makes sense that the E46 knob is being phased out since the car has been superceded by a new model. The E90 M knob should be showing up on this side of the ocean soon to replace it. However, judging from jwocky's photo, the new M knob seems to be different cosmetically. It appears to be made with grey and black leather instead of all black like the E46 knob. Of the two, I think I like the all black one better but I guess it is a matter of personal preference; I would really, really rather have a round knob like the Mini's.

I actually checked if a Mini knob would fit my E90 but it would not. For those worried about the weight, I noticed that the Mini knob is much heavier than the BMW 3 knob and the Mini has been around long enough now that any gearbox issues that are going to show up on account of a weighted shift knob would have shown up. I think that arguments against weighted knobs are bogus and unconvincing, at least the one that I have seen.
