High Pressure Fuel Pump on the N54

Who has a Fuel Pump Problem, how many of us? Thanks in advance for being forthcoming. This is one way we can assess the heaviness of our problem. Maybe we can collect the data and let BMW know that it is prevalent and they have to step up or fork up. Remember the golden rule....critical mass is a must! The costco method, the aaa etc.

I've added a poll to track the number of folks that have had HPFP failure and those that have had an early symptom of a failure, elongated (hard) starting.

Folks - you only need to answer the poll if you've had one of the two issues in the poll. If you had hard starting and then had the fuel pump replaced - check fuel pump. If you've had hard starting but haven't had the pump replaced click elongated starting. If you've had neither - you're lucky. ; -)

Thanks buddy for giving a clearer guideline, hope we can see a silver lining on this issue.

Would it not be fair to also list everyone who had no problems.

I thought about that (you'd have to add the caveat "list everyone who had no problems - yet" ; -) - but not sure it would tell us a lot.

We really don't know how many 135i owners we have viewing this out of the total population nor do we know how many people on this forum with 135is will even respond.

I did think about this though - "How many have had HPFP failures and also have 'tunes'." ; -)

I did not know there is a suspected correlation between the incidence of HPFP failure and tunes.

Browsing the other threads in this forum pertaining to HPFP issues, it suggested itself. (But I don't want to add that as an option - the implications are disagreeable. ; -)

Getting 4-5 second cranks here. I'm getting a diagnostic done next week, I'll keep you guys posted on the results. Though I'm banking on the techs being lazy and saying it's nothing serious.

you need to add "never had a problem" to your poll.

Your poll insinuates that every owner has this problem.

No problem here, but I'm only at 800 miles. Does the problem show up early.. or after 1,500 miles or so.

I've had long cranks since purchase on my 335i. One of my techs already has his FP replaced a few times. I personally know of at least 15 335is with this issue. Not counting the people I've seen on the forum.

So then you vote never had a problem and then next week you develop one. What do you do? Re-vote with a problem? That skews the results.

You cant include both sides in a poll when there is a potential to eventually go from one variable to the other.

You have to count those who had no fuel pump problem before this poll make sense.

Just a backgrounder for you guys who may want to contribute....it was started by Carlitos SS.. bimmertech was also on this thread and a lot of other good guys, it has a lot of good insights! let us not look at the poll as a big drawback on how good our 135 is...hell it really is good overall, I even have a chance to cancel right now but i wont. Let us dwell on the information that we can derive and learn from the data. BMW is a corporation and in as much as they probably do want to solve this, business practices can get shun over profits. It happens...to all car manufacturers. Who knows..we the consumers are the one's at fault due to our practices...low octane? or mixtures on our fuel? or it can be a wide array of things, the more we should seek answers. This is the true test for our maturity, its just not the fun of driving it, we should be able to go down on our knees and look under the chassis...just an allegory...

Prolonged starts.

I got mine back after 2 days @ the dealer, and they said they "tweeked" the software, but could find nothing wrong w/ the fuel pump, and it was starting normally for them every time.
Guess what? Next AM,..it took about 4-5 seconds to start. Seems to only do it when it's been sitting overnight. Car just turned 1500 miles,..have not gone into limp mode yet.
Made appointment for next week after a lengthy discussion w/ the service guy. Even e-mailed him the service bulletins that BimmerTech had posted.
Also asked him to "Pre-Order" the fuel Pump so I dont have to wait for it to come in. They said BMW will not allow them to do that until they verify the part numbers on the current pump.
Told him about all the other 1Addicts members who have been having the same issue. Lets see if they can fix it this time.
