Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Thanks to "The Clash" for the title line.

My '09 128 6MT M-Sport has been a blast to drive every single day. Though I respect the 135 owners, and anyone who uses modifications to "personalize" their car, I have simply enjoyed driving my humble 1er every single time I slide into the seat, which, in my mind, is why BMW is in the car business (or maybe it used to be).

My car will be out of warranty in July, 2013; I'm not mechanically inclined (at least on today's cars).

I could hold out until the 2-Series is available. However, I'm getting "vibrations" about BMW's goal (or "mission," if you're PC).

The new 3-series seems to be a bit less of a "driver's car" than the E90. Still a nice car, but not quite the "ultimate driving machine" as before.

As the E82 shared some components (and some soul) with the E90, I am concerned that the (maybe unfortunate) changes in the new 3-Series will make it's way to the F20 coming down the road.

BMW's presence at the LA Auto Show seems to be promoting the I3. I am not interested in an electric car...not now, and hopefully, not for a while to come.

I'm in a position where I could drive my 128 for a while, have an "out of warranty" BMW for a time, and wait for a "2er," or buy one more 128 next spring.

I simply love to walk out the back door, to the garage, slide into my 1er, and enjoy driving it anywhere, at anytime, and in a quick fashion when the opportunity is there, just as I enjoy putting on a favorite t-shirt or sweatshirt. It takes me back to my '83 GTI (first year USA), but much better in every way.

I would love to read opinions from those of you who have a better viewpoint than I. I'm sure there are a lot of you.

Thanks for putting up with an "old man's" rants!

I say Keep the 1er, but leave it for weekend duty and pick up an older vehicle that you can work on as a daily.

Why get rid of it? I would think when it comes to maintenance costs, the 128i has to be among, if not the least expensive, BMW to maintain. I planned on buying a 128i and loved it when I test drove one....but then a drove a 135i...game over

If you really love this car, see if you can still get an extended from bmw. I believe that this is possible as long as you are not out of warranty. This would surely cost less than a new car..

If you haven't had any issues (at least major ones) with the car to date, by all means keep it!

I woulden't bother with the extended warrenty. I would save the price of the warrenty in a seperate account (just in case) and "drive on"

I think there is a rule of thumb for how much you should save on a yearly basis to prepare for possible repairs once a car is out of warranty. I would look that up and compare it to BMW's extended warranty. IMHO I would keep the 1er no mater what. You're having a blast driving it, it's (if i'm not wrong) the last NA 6 cylinders engine which will make the car an item to have for and driving enthusiast, and I would tend to agree with you on the F20. Having test-drove the F30 on several occasions, it feels more like an appliance than the ultimate driving machine and one can certainly worry this might affect the F20.

The 128i shouldn't be that much for a headache out of warranty, right? Just look at how many high-miler BMWs drive around in Europe. If a car is properly maintained and you haven't had any major issues so far, I say keep it.

Perhaps get an extended warranty if you really want complete peace of mind.

I am in the same boat except my 128i is already out of warranty (53k miles/4 years). I just attended a BMW CCA event at a local indy BMW specialist where they put the car on the lift and inspected it. I was told I can expect:

- water pump failure - quite expensive to replace at around $1,000
- seal around the oil filter housing (it is actually showing a bit of seepage already) - quoted $360 to replace
- slight seepage around the output shaft seal in the transmission (MT) but not bad - was told not to worry

So, overall I am good to keep the car for a couple more years. After that I will get something newer.

IMO it is that it is almost always cheaper to perform preventive maintenance and the occasional ad hoc repair than it is to purchase a new car.
With an athletic vehicle such as yours, the PM should include springs, shocks and steering replacement as needed.
If the interior and exterior are in good shape and PM is performed on the mechanical components, why purchase a new vehicle unless the new vehical performs better?

Agreed!

Keep the car and form a relationship with a good independent BMW shop. Continue to enjoy the car you are in love with and don't worry.

One way or the other, I keep getting this feeling that I'm not going to like the 2-series as much as I like the current 1.

Two other factors--
1. The nearest "indie" shop is over two hours away. The nearest one with good reviews is closer to three.
2. I have a good relationship with my salesperson at the dealer. I've made a few referrals that resulted in sales.

Anyway--thanks for all the comments! I've got six months or so to figure it out. I've got a feeling that I will either keep what I have or buy another E82.
