Woulda bought a 128 if I was worried about the gas mileage...
Seriously though, the 135i is an enthusiast's car no? I'm surprised at how good the mileage is. I get on it around town A LOT. It's always in sport mode and I'm getting 13/14. Which is fine by me given the shit eating grin it provides me everyday!! I suspect the days of being able to buy a small coupe with 300+hp are numbered (though I hope I'm way off). I'm going to enjoy while I can! You can't buy happiness but you sure can rent it!!

I assume you're using imperial gallon which is 20% larger than US gallon, so this is about 30mpg US on the freeway.

A gallon over here is 4.54 litres. What is it in the US then?

Not to sidetrack this talk, but I always wondered about the high variability of mileage over many drivers of the same car(looking in the forums). I've researched Ford Trucks, Ford cars, Z4s, X3s and 135s(BMWs more recently). Every group had some that were doing well and some that could NOT figure our why their numbers are so low....
THEN, I found research on why this happens and data on how engine break-in can change the numbers drastically. If the engine (and rings) don't wear in right in the break-in period, then the compression, oil useage and power all go in the wrong direction... for the life of the engine.... So, I looked at the numbers I had for cars I bought used (for my mpgs) and then I started breaking in the engines for the 1st 1,000 miles. I've done this over 7 new cars(2 trucks, 2 small cars and three "sports" cars) now and I've gotten every one to give me mileage above the sticker on the windows..... I don't drive them easy either.. I have a commute of over an hour and 25 minutes... each way.. Some in town and some highway. So the data supports my theory. Of the cars I've bought used, one had good numbers, three or four were on the low side of OK and a couple were awful. I'm sure I'll get some posts that say it's foo, but I'd say: just go ask anyone that professionally builds race engines.. they'll tell you what happens if you break it in wrong... Sure, there are many other possiblities like various tolerances of the parts in the engine, whether your engine was built on Monday morning, etc Just something to think about if you start looking at why the numbers are all over the place. Oh, my 135i(7000 miles) was getting 28-29mpg on that commute. 70% rural and 30% highway. I expect it to be higher on an all highway trip. |

Sounds like you followed most of the idea. I'm not saying that I "drove it hard" for 1000 miles. That's bad too.
But I didn't even drive it to work until I was done with the first 1000 miles. I guess the whole thing could be attributed to the fact that any large electromechanical device manfactured in the tens of thousands is going to have a variability in terms of performance. Heck, I'm glad I don't have one that burns a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. Almost all car manufacturers call that "within acceptable tolerances" They won't even fix that! |

And you wouldnt have gained a thing if the epa numbers are to be compared:
128i: 18/28 135i: 20/28

True in my case. I have a 2011 128i and I am averaging 20mpg. But I only have 1200 miles on the car so far. Hopefully the numbers will go up with more miles put on the car.

Best mileage I ever got was 34.8 mpg(mainly highway driving 55-65 mph)... Better story, I set the cruise control on the autobahn at 155 mph(yes it will set that high) and switched to the current gas mileage, it never went above 3 mpg and never below 1 1/2. That's fuel economy baby! Lol but seriously this car amazes me still 2 1/2 years later. If I go on a road trip and want to save money this car is great. If I want to have a little fun mixed into that road trip, I still get awesome gas mileage for 300hp/300 lb-ft. Most of the time I could care less what my gas mileage is, but I usually average 23.5 combined the way I drive.
