The bias of the article was towards a "pure BMW from the old school." By that measure, the 1M should not be near the top of any list, in fact it should not even be discussed in such an article, nor should any other "real M" car, other than for maybe the E36 M3s imported into the USA, which lacked the real M engines supplied to those cars sold in other markets.
If the point of the article was that the 228i, even with its electric steering rack, drove at least a bit like an old school BMW (e.g. 2002 but not Tii version, 320i from the 1980s, old 3-series cars when they were small like the recent 1-Series, etc.), then that was a good point to make. The rest of the article was glossy fluff to sell advertising. |

With the exception of the comments about the 1M's appearance (with which I disagree), I thought it was a pretty good article.
I've been on track with a M2 (in the passenger seat at VIR) and it is undoubtedly a more refined car that benefited from more development time and resources. However, I like the rough edges of the 1M and the greater skill it requires to be driven quickly on track. Neil Last edited by MDORPHN; 07-01-2016 at 11:57 AM.. |

The 1M, by necessity, brings out the best in the driver.

It would be silly to expect 1M to be faster than the new generation of cars and especially the new poster boy M2. Sure, M2 is a better designed car. Car designed with purpose and newest technologies available. Nevertheless after all the remarks in the article about less power, twitchy chassis, less superior gearbox and so on 1M was not exactly blown out of the water by M2. Just look at the lap times posted at the end of the article.
1M is a proof of concept car. M2 is a further development of the concept. As of the 1M appearance ..... I only get compliments on how my 1M looks. |

I've always thought the 1M gearbox is excellent (not quite sublime but pretty darn good) so if the M2's gearbox is noticeably superior ... then I want to sample that at some point in the future.

I agree...this is the best BMW manual I've driven. I would also like to know about the "factory refurbished" comment...that's strange. As far as the handling...when I first got it on the track I was not real happy...by the 2nd day, Neil had me feeling much better. Now I think it's great...just got to respect it.

The 1M is more exciting, period!
It managed to top the Cayman R twice in the EVO comparison and in the Evo 2011 Car of the Year contest 5 years ago, share podium with the Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 and McLaren 12C. Those who talked about refinedness and lap time superiority of the M2 are missing the point of the driving pleasure that the 1M provides! Nobody here is going to get Factory sponsorship or money prizes by being slightly faster in their M2 DCT at their local track, anyway. It all comes down to how exciting a car is to drive. |
