Here's a good general comparo concerning "affordable" options to the benchmark Michelin Pilor PS2's/PSS's

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...mparison_tests

The tires you're talking about are in there. As are several other popular tires I see a lot on the forum, yokohama's, nittos, star specs, etc..

I went with hankook ventus v12's. Also on that list. Performed as well as the PS2's (even outlapped them) and the only downside is they feel kinda mushy.

I would look at the C&D article for performance info and reviews from the pro's
However, I would also look at tirerack.com reviews on whatever you're thinking of for day-to-day livability reviews from regular guys

With both reviews in mind, you can make an informed decision instead of just listening to some random guy on a message board tell you to buy whatever his favorite tire is

Also, if your car isn't lowered and you don't plan on lowering, you can bump up to 255/35/18 for the rears for some extra fatness with no problem at all

i've just been researching this, will depend on your widths but i found the following

ok so upon further reading

Tyre Width Equivalency http://www.kouki.co.uk/utilities/vis...ize-calculator

8.5 inches = 225 mm
and the ideal tyre sizing is between 235 & 245 mm with the max being 255

9.5 inches = 245 mm
and the ideal tyre sizing is between 255 & 265 mm with the max being 275

so if was to run my original suggestion 225x40x18 & 245x35x18 i would be running an ever so slight "stretch" which in conjunction with a fender roll will help with fender clearance..

upon FURTHER research this is what the stretch will look like

225x40 on an 18x8.5

and 245x35 on an 18x9.5

i can live with this "stretch"

Re: wheel/tire width relationships

to add a little more color to this discussion:

wheels are typically almost exactly one inch wider than their advertized width when you measure from the outside lips. this is because the posted measurements refer to where the tire bead sits in the rim. have a look at the specs of any tire to get an idea of how it sits on the rim. here's an example:

245 ecsta xs specs

this particular tire has a section width of 9.7" when mounted on an 8.5" wheel. the wheel will measure about 9.5" from lip to lip, so the tire will likely be sittling SLIGHTLY wider than square on the wheel. you can use this to guess how stretched your tires will be... the same tire would look very slightly narrower than square (or "stretched") on a 9" wheel.

also pay attention to the recommended rim widths for a given tire. this tire suggests rim widths ranging from 8" to 9.5". this confirms that the tire will mount pretty square on a 8.5" or 9" rim. it will likely look pretty stretched on a 9.5" rim and will look kinda fat ("baloony") on an 8: wheel. generally speaking, it's more OK to mount a tire on a wheel slightly narrower than recommended, but almost NEVER ok to mount on a wheel wider than recommended.

it's important to look at the specs of the exact tires you're considering, as there can be wild differences in actual dimensions of different tires advertized as the same size.

We've driven our own shop car here with 760 Sports in SoCal weather and we haven't had an issue. Most are sunny days but when it does rain here, it rains quite hard. No problem with hydroplaning or wet weather traction.
