N55 overheated

Was driving my car today, got off the highway after about 30 min of driving. Noticed some slightly strange behavior with car, some lurching and a slight lack of power but nothing really that caused any alarm. About 15 minutes off the highway while stopped at a light I got a high engine temp warning and then 10 seconds later the overheating alert came up. Light went green right after and I was able to just barely pull off the road into a parking lot and shut the car down.

Car is a 2011 with just over 40k miles and bone stock. I'm thinking maybe water pump? Seems to be really early though. Any other thoughts? Its on a flatbed on its way to the nearest BMW dealer (luckily right by my house) for evaluation Friday morning.

Idk about water pump so early, if it was I'd say you'd get a low fluid level as well. I'd think thermostat is bad. Let us know what the issue ended up as.

Looks like it was indeed the water pump. Dealer got everything replaced and performed my VANOS recall work while it was in the shop.

Replaced at no charge under warranty?
I track my 135i a lot.
My warranty ends in May 2015, and Im at 70,000Kms / 43,000 Miles right now.
Would love for this to happen before warranty ends, as I read that these are not cheap to repair.
Also watched a pro video on how to change it. Very inaccessible liggle bugger, this e-Water Pump!

They may have on the new CPO cars. I know they made some major changes to the CPO program last year. Mine was purchased Oct 2013.

$50 deduct is stiil very acceptable for something upwards of $1000 in "dealer labor" rate and parts. Wish I had CPO on mine.

I will be faced with the decision on extending the warranty on my 2011 135i in May 2015. I probably will pass on this option as BMW Canada wants around $2500-3500CAD for 2 years 160,000Kms coverage. I dont see myself spending 3500 in repairs, and e-water pump is about a grand in parts and labor, when it fails ...

Sounds about right. Only other thing I'd be worried about is turbo failure (which would then make the breakeven a lot closer) but not really an issue on the N55.
