I know this is an exhausted topic, with all kinds of different advice, ranging from "keep rpms below 3500 for 1000 miles" to "drive it out of the dealer's lot like you stole it." Most would say go by what your manual advises. I've read one of the most important things to do with a new engine is vary the rpms. Don't put your car in cruise control. My question is this: for the first several hundred miles,if you have an automatic, should you drive in manual? This would allow extending rpms when accelerating, and down-shifting in order to vary rpms. So, put your new car in manual mode or not?

It's not that big of a deal these days. The engine is mostly broken in before you get the car. Driving in manual won't hurt the car and it probably won't help it either.

You could drive the AT in a manual mode, which would allow more variation of engine speed. Howeve, I think the main thing is really just to not drive at one consistent condition.

The rule Ive always gone by is no higher than 55 for the first few hundred miles, but that reasonable throttle (up to 3/4) under controlled conditions is good. Some say the drive like you stole it to seat rings and other such things, but IMO that is done at the factory. The key is to heat cycle everything a few times and let things generally wear in on one another to an optimal fit, without operating at a singular stress or thermal condition.

Drive it normal, low boost and low throttle for the first 500 miles, 500-1000 miles moderate throttle and vary speeds, and after 1000 miiles, get an oil change and drive it like you want.

Did you somehow manage to pick up a left over 2013 from almost three years ago with no or very little miles on it? Or is this for a different car?

When I picked up my car at the factory, they just told me to not go over 160 km/hr for the first 2000 km.

Luckily the odometer hit 2010 km as I turned onto the Stelvio.

My manual said to keep it below 100 MPH for the first 1,200 miles!
