Should I add more oil?
Greetings,
I did a after break-in oil change at 2500 miles on last Friday. The oil looked dirty and I would regret if I didn't have it done. The problem was that I added 7 Quarts into the engine. After I drove around for 20 minutes, the computer displayed at Max. But today on the way back from shopping, it displayed 3/4 full between Min and Max. I checked for leaking and did not find any leaking. So should I add more oil into it or just drive with 3/4 full? Thanks for any input. Best Regards, UNO

The manual said 6.9 Quarts with filter removal is the capacity. This really confused me. Thanks for your experience anyway.

It appears the oil level reading only reads out in 1/4 quart increments. Mine has shown a completely full level since new, except one time it showed 3/4 full but now shows completely full again, without my adding oil.
I wouldn't add any oil unless and until the car indicates it's 1 quart low. It's not going to be starved for oil with 6 quarts still in the sump. |

I've changed my oil at 1300 miles and again at 5500 miles, both times I used 7 full quarts. Both times my oil level is at the proper level. Are you sure your not letting the engine get warmed up first? You should wait about 10 minutes before checking.

I drove 20 minutes and it was still showing 3/4 full. I might care too much on this problem and really missed the stick. Thanks a lot.

Am I missing something? I'm at 9,600 miles and have yet to change the oil. I thought the car lets you know when it's time to get the oil changed. I hope I'm not hurting my baby!

The car should show you the miles remaining until the next oil service when you start the car, or you can navigate through the iDrive menu or the OBC on non-iDrive cars to determine the next service. In the US, BMW will change the oil for free if the oil has not been changed in one year (since the last oil service or since your delivery date), regardless of what the computer says. For example, I have 12,900 miles on my car, have not changed the oil, and it's showing 6,000 miles until the next service. Because I probably won't put that many miles on my car before July (one year from the delivery date), I will get a free oil service in July, although the computer will not tell me I'm due for it. If I did accumulate 6,000 miles before the service (for a total of about 18,900 miles on the odometer), the car would indicate a service is required and warn me of that when I started the ignition. |

you have it reset. This brought me to another concern. How much will it cost to do a reset after warranty? Otherwise, the computer will keep reminding me for an oil change which I have actually done by myself.

Does it matter which BMW dealership I take my car in for an oil change? Because the one the car's from is about an hour and a half a way. |

It's not actually on the secret menu, but the procedure I believe is used to reset the CBS is very similar. I have no idea how this is done on an iDrive car. Perhaps the same procedure works. Turn the ignition to what would be "position 2" if we had a traditional key system--put in the fob and press the start button until the warning lamps on the dash activate. I think you can also access this menu with the engine running, but I haven't tried it that way. Clear any Check Control messages from the screen. Mine *always* displays "low battery." BMW says this is normal, however no one else's car seems to do this, but I digress... This procedure won't work if there are Check Control messages (like low washer fluid) displayed in the main information window, so just tap the button on the end of the turn signal stalk to clear them if they come up. Push and hold the odometer reset button--the button on the instrument cluster, not the button on the end of the turn signal stalk. Several things will happen within a short time frame: The trip odometer will reset, then go back to its original value. An ABS message will display. Then, the date of and distance until the next service will display. Let go of the button now instead of waiting 15 seconds or so for the secret menu to appear. You can scroll through the various service items using the knob on the turn signal stalk. I believe the reset is accomplished by pressing on the odometer reset button while the item you want to reset is displayed. I have not tried resetting an item, and do not intend to. If you reset an item, it will reset the time and distance until the next service, so I would not try to do this on a car that is still covered under Full Maintenance. |

However, I will have break pads and etc. changed by them. I did not try "reset" today and will try it when OBC promotes me to do an oil change later.
