which one has less differentials??
unless you live somewhere really snowy, it's a pretty big compromise to have a lesser car for 352 days a year for 13 days of snow A non XI will be more fun to drive, get better gas mileage, be faster than an Xi if there's any way to avoid an Xi it should be avoided (still better than a truck though) |

2 wd regular i's do great in snow provided you put snow tires on them. A ton of fun with the electronic babysitters off. I never found drifting in a 4wd all that cool.

I had the same dilemma and decided on the i version instead of the ix. 330 i is on order.
Several reasons: 1. The XI adds a considerable amount of weight. 2. 330i with the snow tires will be fine. I used to have a Miata and with snows, got through all road conditions with some good controlled slides every now and then :-) 3. Extra money to buy a set of blizzaks and wheels 4. Lastly, dealer could not confirm whether ix will be raised an inch or so similar to the 2005 model. To me, the added hieght of the car seemed odd. I live in a hilly part of NJ, and with my current rear wheel drive car (in all season tires), only had to wait once last year to drive up the hiill to my driveway. (park at bottom of neighborhood until the plows went through) With snows, I think it will work fine. |

This is odd. Audi uses quattro (their 4 wheel drive system) as a selling point, whereas BMW doesn't use Xi as their "ulitmate". Maybe it's 4wd is just better than front wheel drive?
Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't Xi focus 90% of the power on the rear wheels when the car is in motion, and only transfers power to the front wheels when the rear wheels slip? I remeber seeing this on one of bmw's web videos...something about keeping the drive sporty |

Hi all-
New to the board as I am currently looking into purchasing an e90. I am also unsure as to whether I should buy the 325i or xi. Money is not an issue, however I don't want to put down an extra $1,800 if I don't really need to. I live in Northern NJ and have visited the Park Ave BMW dealership in Maywood, NJ and the salesman said that if I plan on driving alot in all weather conditions... that I shouldn't hesitate in getting the XI because the 325i will slip around in the snow... Anyone have an e46 RWD? and if so, how did you manage driving in the snow? |

I had a 2004 E46 325i that handled snow without any problems on its stock continental tires during the frequent and heavy snow storms we had from Dec 2003-March 2004... this was in Berkeley Heights, NJ..
In fact that car handled snow much much better than my 2003 E320 which is a heavier car |

Well- I've seen numerous BMWs in the ditch or going sideways during the snow/Ice. The cars don't handle very well in the snow, but maybe that's because I live in the snowbelt. I'd stay with the XI.

Thats my problem right there... my family's E320 is junk in the snow and they keep pressuring me to choose the AWD because of that. My mother also had issues with her 2000 RWD Lexus GS 300 when it came to the snow... Obviously, I have no idea what I'm going to do! Anyone think that the xi will be lifted too high with too much wheel gap if 17" rims were put on there without sport package? I really am not a fan of the 16" stock rims and would prefer to get something from BMW thats 17". Any options there? |

In defense of the 2003 E320... with new all season tires, I was able to handle the winters in NJ pretty well... this included daily commutes from berkeley hts - newark via rt 78, and occasionally taking the longer scenic route past the short hills mall, the livingston mall, etc...
On tires that had about 10k miles worth of wear on them... then it was a different story.... My neighbor who lives across the street had the prev. gen GS300 and he'd get regularly stuck in the snow etc coming up to our street... he just bought a new GS300 AWD so who knows how it'll handle... It boils down essentially to the tires... if you have good relatively new all season tires or some quality winter tires, you'll have no problem... if you don't but you have AWD, you'll be slipping and sliding regardless... My suggestion is skip the XI package, and go with the regular I |
