SA petrol octane rating?
Sup guys I was just wondering what the octane rating of SA petrol was? Is it different depending on which petrol station you go to? Where do you get the highest octane petrol from and what is the safest but most powerful here?
Thanks people |

Hey Trist,
Here's some light reading from BMW. Note, this article has no mention about high performance or race fuel(98/100 OCT). Just another quick fact i picked up from BMW, all the performance stats regarding power and torque quoted from BMW are quoted using 98 OCT fuel. Just thought I'd share https://www.bmw.co.za/ownerscircle/f...lity/index.asp BTW.. SA octane rating is 93 or 95, this is the RON rating, RON stands for something like Research Octane Number and is used in most parts of the World. However if you compare this to the USA specifications you need to look at the Anti Knocking Index (or something along those lines), to convert the two you need to work of a base. I have found that a ratio of SA 95RON fuel = USA 91 fuel is most used.
Regarding race fuel, you can get some shell, but you need contacts and I also heard there is one BP dealer who is selling 98RON fuel. But you would need to do the research there. GL! ^_^

Thanks for that bro.
Um well this is going to sound strange but I don't have a car... I'm not 18 yet I know that some people will think that I'm to young for a car like the 135i...or that if I get it, I'm a spoilt brat but the truth is I'm not. And I'm sure you will agree with me that I have good taste |

Trist - you can get octane booster additive, but probably easier to fill up at Kyalami or one of those places where they sell racing fuel.
I'm grateful I didn't have 225kW available to me when I was 18, because I was shameless. My bright red citi golf used to go on routine trips sliding down wet grassy inclines, pirohetting around trees, dirt-road rallying and ramping all four wheels off the road at every opportunity (older folk may remember VW's "The Right Stuff" advert which provided inspiration). During these adventures, it seldom ran below 5000rpm, the symptom of an inexplicable spasm in my right leg. |

I use Shell V power. I read somewhere on the net after doing some research that Shell 95 octane actually has a reading of 96.7 and I can see and feel the difference. Add an octane booster to 20 litres of fuel and you have 10 RON more at 106 and to 40 litres you will get 104 octane. I can give you all the distributers for ocyane boosters if you want. You can even make your own.....diections on the net. I notice a huge difference when using the boosters and the Dyno shows that it works.
