extra Ins when shipping a car for PCS?

I\'m wondering if any of you acquired additional insurance when you had your car shipped for a PCS move. In the event of a total loss the most I can be reimbursed is 20k if I do not purchase additional insurance on my own. My current insurance will not cover me once the car is put on the boat and I can not purchase additional coverage through the carrier. Anybody have any advice/experience on this? Who is a good company to get ins through that may cover this?

Well I talked to USAA and they will write me a German policy that is going to come out to about $250 a month. Thats with a $500 deduct so it will be a bit less with a $1000 deduct. Most importatntly it will cover me while the car is being shipped. I didn't really plan on even looking at insurance rates till I got over there so I don't know how competetive that quote is. This issue kind of blindsided me since I was originally told by TMO that my auto would be covered up to 40K. Now I'm up against a time crunch since I drop it off at the VPC tomorrow. I think I am just going to take this and if it turns out I find a better quote once I am there I'll just swap over then.

Anybody have any advice to give on this?

Although it is unlikely, if something catastrophic happens to the car and it is totaled I need to be covered.

Thanks
Wade

You made a good choice. I've been with USAA for over 10 years and can't complain at all. Insurance rates are not cheap but at least they don't have a "Nurburgring" clause like some european insurance companies around here like the ones affiliated to AIG.

Also when you get here, sign up for ADAC. It's like AAA but in my opinion, alot better. A must if you plan on doing alot of driving and traveling here in Europe.

What do you mean by Nurburgring clause? In my quote there is a statement saying something to the effect of ...."The policy does not cover liability or medical for any vehicle operated in or in practice for a driving contest or challenge". Is this what you mean by "Nurburgring" clause?

Thanks

During Touristenfahren days (Tourist Driving days) the Nordschleife is considered a toll road, with an entrance and an exit. In laymans terms, you are doing "spirited" driving but in a closed circuit. I know some insurances here specifically name Nurburgring as a place they will not cover you at all if you are involved in an accident. Dackelone might know some more but during the tourist driving days you aren't practicing for a driving contest or challenge.

Nick pretty muched summed it up. I've got USAA myself and have had good support. I also do my renters ins and it's all rolled into one pkg. They'll basically payout the worth of your vehicle. Did you get GAP ins thru your bank when you financed your car?

Thanks for the input guys. I went ahead and went with USAA. Once I get over there and get situated I'll do some research and compare some other options. For now though at least I am fully covered.

I am really surprised that the gov/shipper would only cover 20k in the event of a total loss. Seems like the military is trying to pull a fadt one here on the cheap. There are so many opportunities for something to happen in transport that would cause more than 20k that its crazy not to be fully covered.

I also have usaa and have never had a problem. I think that they are hands down the best company to be insured with. If you do find a cheaper quote over there, thru aig or the other main one, I doubt the coverage and service will be close to what usaa will provide.

USAA is by the military (retired member started it) for the military. The Goberment expects us to cover some of it by our own insurance....they claim it's not a right to ship a vehicle...

I had aig...the office people were a joke

Nothing but problems for three years then switched to usaa...no issues since. Probably a bit more expensive but they only insure guys like us so I'm ok with that.

Thanks for the replies guys, looks like I'll be fine with USAA. The part that irked me about this little insurance deal was all the misinformation that caused me to handle this last minute. I guess it's pretty typical for the AF though.....nobody has an answer for anything or worse yet think they do and tell you the wrong thing.
