2013 n55 dyno tune vs jb4
Hey all
Just picked up a 2013 135 with 16k miles. It is a replacement for my wrecked 2012 from last year. This time around, I know more of what to expect with the car and all and want to make better choices from the getgo in terms of mods. So of course in stock form, power is to be desired, so I'm already looking for options. I'm reading that options are a bit limited for the 2013s. I was initially planning a BMW ppk to help with the throttle lag and get the exhaust burbles, then throw on a jb4. However, I called up a local respected BMW shop and then recommended a dyno. All I'd have to bring is a downpipe. Now I haven't read about dyno tunes too much on this forum. Are they seen as better on these cars? Will the tune eliminate the throttle lag? I was told to expect 80-90 hp gain. And when I add exhaust and intake, the car would adapt and I wouldn't need to get the tune adjusted. What are your thoughts guys? |

A JB4 will auto-adjust as you add the mods, but if you do nothing but DP & MHD stage 1 flash, you'll get much better throttle response and exhaust burbles. I love my JB4 (spend the extra money and get bluetooth gauges on your phone) but most people see it as un-necessary until you get meth. These days the MHD OTS maps will get you to chargepipe, IC, DCI, inlets & Downpipes (FBO) - then add the JB4 when you're considering meth. Only then would I be thinking a custom tune is going to give you the hp/$ return. |

The short answer is you probably need a one-time bench flash to unlock your ECU.
MHD Supports: 2010-2013 135i, 135is and 335i 2013-2015 X1 35i 2010-2013 X5 35i 2011–2014 X6 35i !!! Important !!! Vehicle equipped with a MEVD1726 DME (built dating from around 03-2012) need a once time DME removal and bench flash to allow OBD flashing. See FAQ below. Q: How can I determine if the DME is directly flashable or needs a one time bench flash? A: got to http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/select and enter the last 7 digits of your VIN in serial number. Click Browse parts the ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM and check both CONTROL UNITS > MEVD1726 section. If the it says "No parts found matching your car." you have a MEVD172 which is directly flashable. ... I could tell you a few shops in Australia that'll do the unlock for you, but that wouldn't be much help - I'd do a quick ring around to your local BMW tuning shops to see what they'll do it for. I'd expect change from $200. |

MHD seems to be the better way from what I have read. I was about to do it but I need to sell my 135i. I was running the JB4 for a while and it makes great power, but people rant and rave about the MHD.
