In a year or two, audi doesn't build RS models early in model cycles unlike BM and Merc unfortunately.

and we hope the M2 would be available or at least specs disclosed by then... at which time the 45 may be old news and left behind

Meh just another detuned VAG engine, likely mandated so by the bean counters and marketers.

After 8 months of A45, I have to say it's a dumb idea unless they make some drastic changes e.g. RWD biased AWD (ala Nissan GTR), manual and no DCT tranny, smaller twin turbos, improved suspension, hydraulic steering, improved engine sounds etc.... the 45 DCT, single large turbo and 4C2L engine combo is awful when pushed round twisties imo. There are also 4million A-class on Sydney roads...

Not a drivers car, but more of a Xbox or PS3. A45 is what most want.

Even after 1 hour drive in the mountains these short comings were pretty obvious! I used to tell anyone who cared to listen that the A45 is not that good a performance car. Sure it will get you from point A to B faster than just about anything thanks to the AWD and power, but you will spend half that time fighting understeer, fighting the DCT that doesn't do what you tell it to do, and putting up with the car's ride and correcting the car as it bounces around the b-roads.

Now the M235i on the other hand, what a car! Put a dozen or so laps around Phillip Island track yesterday and had a few motorkhana runs with it and what a car! Beautifully balanced, strong grip and great engine and sound. Of course I sort of knew this already as I own a M135i, but the M235i is just tighter and better everywhere from suspension to sound. I've been complaining that the M135i is just a tad soft everywhere even as a road tool, and I think BMW recognised that and made the right changes to the M235i and made it just that much better than the M135i and made it a real weapon.

Did they install the Performance exhaust on the demo cars at PI? The extended loan car was OEM and I thought it was very muted.

What do think of the steering feel? I thought turns were precise but feedback was pretty numb, expectedly from the electronic steer.

I drove it in an environment where it was revved up all the time so the exhaust sounded fine to me! It certainly sounded more aggressive than on my M135i. Maybe because you come from A45 where it is very loud that you think it's muted? Also I stood by the pit wall and listened to the cars come down the straight, and blardy hell they don't sound half bad at that speed from the outside! In any case I've heard the M Performance exhaust in normal driving and you should get that regardless. As for the steering, I'm so used to these numbs feel now that I don't even notice it anymore. When I first got an electric steering Porsche, I was a bit sad about the lack of feedback. But now when I drive them, I don't even realise the electric steering anymore. All I feel is the precise nature of it. The M235i has a pretty direct steering and I don't mind it one bit.

M235i for the Mrs.
1M for the Mr.

That has my tick of approval for romance.

Fair call W. The 45 exhaust is best part of the car and the part I will miss most (besides the seats). It's also the worst part of the car in that you're always driving like an idiot holding revs for the loud booms and cracks, upshifts downshifts. In the manual driving mode, I was always busy... too busy for a peak traffic daily. I will definitely change the 235 exhaust, not sure if it's the Remus or M performance.

I was looking for a 80km peak hour traffic daily driver. I hated 45 after a while. As some forum members know, I was considering M4, Cayman GTS and 235i. So 235i makes shit loads of sense!

I don't drive my 1M with my dick out in front so I don't feel the need to compare every car with it The 1M and 235i are two different cars, they drive differently and they serve different purposes. I certainly don't believe BMW created the M235i to replace the 1M I don't even call it M235i but just 235i.

I will have the 235i for calm daily drives and able to squirt hard a little whenever I feel stupid. It will not see the track and if I can find time to go to the track, I will take the M. Perfect combo I think

235i will go when my name on the M2 list gets fulfilled in year and bit.
