Well since BMW is not willing to give me 100% coverage on my turbos, I ended up doing the spring trick to get rid of 90% of the wastegate rattle. Also made some license plate hole plugs and painted them with the OEM touch up paint (3 coats).

Holy hell, that is the craziest sub placement I've ever seen. Would have loved to see the "in-progress" pics of that. Looks like they did a really awesome job. Are you at all worried about dirt/damage to the sub?

I've seen several other up-front subs, and these guys put the same driver in an E30 M3 footwell a couple years ago - so I knew they were up to the task. I saw the floorpan after they cut out the insulation to 'glass the box. There's like 5 inches of foam in there! I love how the installer repurposed the cut-out floor carpet to trim the box. Looks like it belongs. (A little strip along the bottom with a concave curve on the upper edge would not have hurt my feelings, but I don't think there was enough left to do it.) I'm waiting for my shop to post the build log on an audio forum. When they do, I'll post a link in my "First Mods" thread. I'm not too worried. I've run polymer-cone woofers in side enclosures in the trunk of two (previous) cars for a combined total of some 14 years without grilles and experienced no damage, even though the cars were my DD's, took 'em skiing and camping, loaded up at grocery and hardware stores, and have had kids climbing all around. My passengers don't kick their feet nearly as much as they used to. The cone is treated carbon fiber. I can remove the steel grille if needed for cleanup, and the floormat covers over it completely - even bending a little bit up under the dash. As a passenger (unless you're a super-observant 1addict ), you really can't tell it's in there. I don't think my wife even knows yet. And, yes, I vacuumed the floor AFTER taking the pictures. That moment when you know you drive a cool car when you are driving to work and a kid rolls down his window to take a video of it!
Yeah, that just made my day!

Must be the DSB!!! He probably showed it to his high schooler friends. Still cool nonetheless. Never had that happen before!

Ha, I'm nearby in Silver Spring, I'm thinking of leaving my car in the garage under my office!

Spring trick? I've already had my wastegates done once and now the rattle is back again after 50K miles. Its driving me nuts, the damned things are louder than my BOV in low gears

Weight distribution and CG!
Actually, tons of reasons. I wanted to put 2 in the trunk, but that left no room for the amps, and not much for cargo. Plus weight. And $$$. It takes a lot of tuning to get a rear sub to blend seamlessly into the front soundstage. BMW's have very well sealed trunks, and it takes a lot of power to get adequate output up at the driver location. Convertibles eat bass, and it takes even more juice to maintain an even response at speed. They had to put the amps somewhere, and the rear corner where a sub often goes was as good a place as any. My installer did a similar passenger footwell sub in an E30 M3 with very good results and I think it's awesome. Though some carpet and foam were removed, the structural integrity of the vehicle was not altered. And it probably added under 12lbs of box and speaker. The real question is - Why Not?!? |

Went for a drive with my new external mic and dashcam. I need to get a windshield for the mic, the wind killed the noise! Just ordered it on ebay along with a suction cup mount to hold the mic. I need to get it ready for next spring when I go on the track!
