I had both the E36 M3 and the E46 M3. This is way better than both. Same size as the E36 M3 with the same (or actually better) performance than the E46 M3. By better, I mean DCT and way more torque from down low, and just as fast. Had to rev the shit out of the E46 M3 to get going. Plus, the manual in the E46 wasn't the best.

I too am waiting for the 1's replacement, and I hope an M version will be ready within 3yrs, but not likely. The F30 is a excellent automobile that really shows it's capabilities once you really start to open it up and go faster, it begs for more. But, it's size still shows itself. BMW did a great job at hiding/controlling it for the most part. However, the 135i benefits from it's naturally smaller dimensions. The only thing lacking in the 135i is better suspension tuning. But then, my 335i Msport with M adaptive suspension can also use better tuning, as BMW went a bit too soft with it, needs more spring rate, the adaptive dampers are great and could handle it easily. I'm a manual driver, but all the test drives with the new ZF 8spd sport AT whetted my desire to give this automatic a try. As an AT is does NOT disappoint. This is the most responsive and fast automatic , and best AT I've ever driven. It's easily a match to the ZF DCT and Audi's DSG, and it's smoother at take off. On very twisty roads that require a good amount of speed and gear changes, this sport AT is flawless. It's faster and smoother up or down than I am. On those roads are high speed that's when this AT shows what it does best, and it's best is amazing. But I still miss my 135i MT. As much as I'm amazed with the sport AT's performance, it does not replace the drivers touch and feel, and engagement of a good MT. Also, the brakes on my 335i are very nice with plenty of stopping power, the 135i has better brake feel with better modulation. Another difference, the electric assist in the F30 is ok, and the steering is very responsive and accurate, but it doesn't equal the firm heft, and tactile response of the hydraulic steering in the 1 series. BMW needs better tuning with their electric assist steering. The next gen 1 will likely have electric assist, let's hope BMW has addressed the F30 issues as they tune the next 1 series. Did you get the 328i sport line? AT or MT? What tires came on your F30? My Msport, thankfully, came with Bridgestone S001's "max performance" summer tires. These rubber donuts stick extremely well, and can take a 90 degree hard turn at high speed with no squeak or squirm whatsoever. Braking has amazing grip. This is one area where a lot of F30 tests showed lackluster performance. But, nearly all the F30's used for testing by the mags were equipped with Goodyear summer TOURING tires, even on sport F30's. Don't blame the chassis or the braking system. It's those lackluster tires. BMW made a mistake putting those tires on the cars they gave for professional testing. I'm looking forward to new tests of the Msport models to see how much improved the test results are. They may not be, but it would be very surprising if handling and braking didn't improve. These next gen RFT's have a better ride than what the RFT performance summer tires on my 135i. There is still some harshness over bigger bumps with the 335i due to the RFT's, so not everything is perfect with the next gen. On the 135i the OEM RFT's gave very harsh characteristics over bumps, very harsh. Replacing the RFT's with non RFT's is a revelation on the 1 series. I'll be changing my 335i's RFT's in a month or so to non RFT's. It'll be cool having access to both the F30 and 135i. Your 328i has a very nice and powerful N20 4 cylinder. But the 3.0 N55 in the 135i is a good bit more powerful My 135i had the N54, very strong power. My 335i with the N55 has amazed me. Even though the 335i is larger and heavier, the power from the N55 is stronger in my 335i than the N54 in my 135i. I know that sounds strange to 1 series owners. I too am surprised by this. I may have got lucky and caught a nicely built N55, but I have a feeling there is something up with the N55's in the F30's. Other than car and drivers lackluster low 5 second run to 60, 2 other big mags tested F30 335i's at 4.7 to 60. That's the same as an N54 135i, which is a smaller and lighter car/116lb less. The only way to accomplish that is to have even more power considering the F30 weighs 116lbs more. F30 335i w/AT is 3555lbs. 135i w/DCT is 3439lbs. For reference: F30 328i w/AT is 3410lbs 135i w/AT-DCT is 3439lbs 135i w/AT weighs MORE than the F30 328i. 128i w/AT is 3285lbs, 125lbs less than F30 328i AT. Even though the F30 is a larger car, it's amazing how well BMW kept the weight gain down. I hope the 1 series replacement, at least, keeps the weight the same, but better yet it should be lighter. |

I would quote your well written post but it is lengthy!
I agree with all your points. My 328i is a no line but I still push it to what I can and believe it does the job well. I just miss the sporty ride that I grew accustomed to my whole life. My complaint is that it is just too comfy...the motor is great and even the handling is great. I am actually taking it to the track on oct1 to see what I can get out of it. I probably should have ordered a 335i with less options but at the time I didn't have time to wait on a build. Pretty satisfied with my no line - comfort access, tech, premium so I just went with it. Coming from an evo I desperately wanted someething more comfortable but then after driving the smaller car I know where my roots will always be! Planning on putting on some non rfts and maybe something a bit more wider and lower profile. My original plan was to go with a full suspension setup and get some rims but now I'm thinking that money can be saved to go towards an M2 / M3 (and that M2 better come out). |

I really like the 328i's twin scroll turbo.
