I am wrong. It actually worked quite nicely. The hold/pocket has a good depth and it holds water bottles, ice tea glass bottles, even a large BK cherry Coke icee. It's actually nicer than the 2 cup spots we have, which interferes quite a bit with my manual shifter when anything taller than a small coffee cup is in there. I'd actually prefer if BMW included one of those in-dash holders in our 1 series dash. OP, there is a cup holder add-on that clips to the center console. The holder is then located towards the passengers left knee. It looks to be a good size. Here's one that mounts on your door. http://www.bavauto.com/shop.asp Here are some more from BMW: http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/acc...rds=cup+holder Last edited by RPM90; 05-27-2010 at 11:00 PM.. |

Here is the DIY from another member for the bmw i-drive version http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=224061
I got the parts a month ago, but haven't felt like ripping my interior apart. The bavarian auto door mount one looks good, I might try one of those. Coming from a 3 series with the retractable dash cupholders, the problem I had was my beverages would spill out onto my passenger on left turns. In the one, it just gets all over the center console. I try not to use paper coffee cups, but sometimes forget my travel mug. Other than that, the 3er cupholders held up good.

Suggesting a BMW should not have adequate cup holders because it is "the ultimate driving machine" is silly. It's dangerously close to saying it doesn't need comfortable seats, or a radio, or carpet, or AC, or heat, or anything else more for the comfort of the driver than for the car. I don't really care that Germans don't want to carry drinks in their car, I do.
I just got back from a 350 mile, each way, trip yesterday. If I am in traffic and busy, I do not take time to mess with the radio or sip a drink. But when I am bored silly going down the interstate, I have plenty of time to stay hydrated. I like the idea of adding the idrive cup holder but last time I looked on RealOEM there was a comment about a core required or something. I'm not sure you can buy the parts without return an old one. Taking the console out to do the install is also a pretty big job. Looks pretty simple once the console is out, however. Jim

Two that are actually functional would be fine. The one under the armrest is completely useless for anything other than a cell phone holder. |

I found out when ordering my car that if you put in the idrive system when you first order your car and then delete the idrive system later (before production) you get the 3rd cup holder. (since you only get it when you order the idrive system) It's a bit of a loop hole.
The reason some may have gotten the cup holder without going through this mess is b/c their dealership may have had an alottment of cars (to order) and they had to delete the idrive system to order it to the customer specs.

Having a convenient place to put a water bottle when doing a 5 hour drive is far from luxury or a living room. I enjoy driving very much, and my body enjoys a fresh supply of water too. That's a more Euro mentality, but most Europeans don't have to drive the distances we do in the US. We have a very large country that coves a lot of miles. Driving and being comfortable and not mutually exclusive. |

I'm sorry, but that third cupholder is heinous. I'm so glad I don't have one of those in my car. It looks like some cheap add-on from Pep Boys or something. Ruins the feng shui of the cabin.

that big cup holder is a piece of shit. the tongue part breaks all the time. virtually every passenger sees it and thinks "oh i'll press against the tongue for fun" and it flies off.
