135 in slalom vs SUVs
I really was enjoying reading post that SUV seem more stable than 135 in turns. So I did a little Internet research to find the best SUV, but alas.
The article http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars...1270186?page=2 Claims that slalom speed of Acura MDX 40.6mph. Far not best one, when best one is TOYOTA Matrix XRS with 46.0mph. So I guess 135 never will catch Toyota in slalom. However from other source: http://www.insideline.com/bmw/1-seri...35i-coupe.html 135 coupe slalom speed is 72.4. Again slaloms look a bit different 525 FT. vs 6 x 100 ft, but not so different to understand that when you modify your car, be careful and do not make it less stable than SUV.

That article on the SUVs is 8 years old, lot of changes happen over 8 years.
If you want to compare Edmunds numbers, the current gen MDX does the slalom at 62.6 and gets .82 Gs on the skidpad. http://www.insideline.com/acura/mdx/...acura-mdx.html Although I'm convinced the drivers at Edmunds aren't as adept at pushing the vehicles to their limits compared to C&D/MT/R&T. C&D has it at .86 Gs on the skidpad. Still, it's not bad considering it was wearing H rated All Seasons, put some sticker rubber under it and you'd be surprised. |

I own both a SUV and a 128i. There is no SUV that can stay with me through a slalom in my 128i. If I changed it such that a SUV, even the best one on the planet, could stay with me through a slaloom I would be a complete idiot. They are in totally different categories. As is indicated by the 40mph versus 70mph results cited.

I've chased a Cayenne Turbo around a corkscrew on-ramp, and they're pretty damn impressive for something so big. I wasn't at the absolute limit, and wasn't on great tires, but I was certainly glad to see the road straighten up so I could blow by his ass.
In the real world the 135i can get twitchy in the corners if you're trying to put some power down. If you hit a bump and unsettle the inside tire, it starts spinning, and that leaves all the lateral force on the outside tire. |

So it was my point, trying to mod car you can get opposite effect than you try to achieve. I can admit that my 135 is extremely stable and it is complete stock. It is stable on wet surface as well. I previously owned Z4 and can tell that on dry surface it feels more confident, however it feels shaky in rain. 135 seems same stable in rain, although it is scary going on the same speed over ramp in rain, not because car starts slipping, just based on previous experience. I guess SUV drivers have the same problem coming from previous models and drive slowly over ramps. If new Acura MDX can do 62mph in slalom then I take my hat off.
Regarding selling 135 and take SUV, I still consider SUV isn’t practical for commute car.

Our FX35 feels much more stable in corners than the 1er but that's because it has a very wide stance and very wide tires on 20" wheels with the sport suspension. There is virtually no body roll. Just a very different beast. I would rather take the 135 in the twisties any day of the week.
