DIY: N54 $2 BOV Mod

Not sure if this has been covered. Here's a quick and easy write up for the $2 blow off valve mod that you can do on stock N54's:

I apologize if cross-posting is not allowed. LMK, and I will host up the pictures on here.

So you basically just capped the ports off and got rid of the connecting hose?

Won't the ECU be looking for the air and have idling problems? Or is it smart enough to compensate?

No problems
This is exactly what you do with any aftermarket bov.

I don't think this is a "smart" mod.

I'm not saying it is, but I'd love to know why not.

It would be bad if these cars were MAF but they're not so it's ok IMO

Would love for you to elaborate on this.

For the other comments ITT:

- N54 do not have MAF sensors, so no harm, no foul.
- This modification also doubles as a means of preventing oil blow-by being recirculated into the intake tract. Working on creating a "collector" for a cleaner look.
- No CEL or drive-ability difference, as the caps prevent any sort of leak. Aftermarket chargepipes/BOV setups operate in the same fashion. I've had the car setup like this for nearly a year, and still love the sound.

its fine, this has been done for my car for almost a year and I have one of the most modded 135s out there. No downside to doing this, no real upside either though aside from nicer turbo sounds.

This raises a question, is there a reason to have an oil catch can if you are capping the recirc?

I have an oil catch can. Would it be stupid to do both?

Also, I want sound videos!

I was thinking about this, and I believe an OCC is a better solution, as it is plumbed into the system earlier than my collector idea. TBH, the collectors are just temporary until I pick up an OCC.

I'll make a quick sound video. It's quieter than aftermarket BOV, and does not sound "ricey" at all. It's loud enough to enjoy, but not loud enough to gain unwanted attention.

I am asking mostly because I already have an OCC that I am about to install this week but I also have the recirc capped already so the whole point of the OCC is to stop the oil from getting back into the intake system but this is achieved already by capping. Is that correct? If so I have a new OCC for sale lol.

Yes, that is technically correct. However, the OCC is a more effective tool for doing the job, as it is plumbed in-line earlier into the system, thus able to capture more blow-by/build up.

Video is live. Watch it in HD because YT compressed the hell out of the video:

So this won't cause damage to the motor?
And excuse my stupidity, but where is the air that is usually recirculated going?

Your motor will explode, and you will die in a fiery crash of death and destruction. No, there is no damage to be done.

The stock components are still functioning exactly as they did before. The stock setup has the recirculating tubes sending the the excess air back into the system. By doing this mod, the excess boost pressure is effectively "venting to atmosphere" instead of going back into the system, hence the noise.
Look up how a BOV works, the first paragraph explains everything succinctly:

I just did this last night, went to Lowes bought the 7/8s plugs/caps. Came in a 4 pack. cost me more than $2 though! $2.42 after tax! I love it, not as loud as the video though. Quick question, I keep seeing pictures of the big plastic piece near the firewall gone and nobody mentions removing it in any of the DIYs I have seen, is that piece needed? (not the cabin filter piece, the big plastic piece below it).
