the truth hurts, doesn't it....

he is right. it is not a thoroughbred M car----more a composite of spare parts from other cars. NOW, i'm not saying that the 1M isn't worthy of being badged an "M" car---because i think it is a great car. But to say that it does have tailored M pedigree is inaccurate, as the car was patched together using other parts.

Nope not a thoroughbred...more like a rare breed.

My local dealer was not aware that the correct diff fluid is the version with the friction modifier. I had to explain this to the service advisor, parts man and the lead tech. They welcomed the information and put the right fluid in.

The correct diff fluid is part number: 83-22-2-282-583
The service bulletin showing this is: 33 02 11

The dyno was a dynojet. Keep in mind that an M3 was dynoed before clockwork orange and another dynoed after. Both those M3s had precise numbers (same results).

So unfair to stereotype the parts guy. As a matter of fact, that guy has a Valencia Orange M (see picture below).

A real ///M car, yes. It has the suspension, the LSD, the balance, the feel, etc.

FWIW I always use full synthetic (not BMW's half-synthetic unless it's at my free yearly oil change) Castrol or Mobil 0w-30 euro blend. Wtf is this 10w-60 bullshit?
It is the oil that is used in the M3.

Hush-hush, that's the big secret. Cfr. the lyrics of "Wrapped Around Your Finger" of The Police: "You consider me the young apprentice [...] Then you'll find your servant is your master".

LOL @ the defense of the 1M owners.

i never insulted you. i just told you the truth. your cars ARE just spare parts from other cars...if you can't accept that as the truth, then you are lying to yourself.

I'm quite happy with my E92 M.....so don't bait me with your BS.

MM33 - are you saying "spare" parts are bad parts? What's wrong with M3 underpinnings in a lighter, more torquey package? ;-)

So you are saying that the suspension and brakes from the M3 competition package (which BMW says it is their best handling car to date), the LSD from the M3 and a tuned version of the N54 (awarded engine of the year in 2007 - 2010) amongst others, are "spare parts"??? Seems more like hand picked top of the line components to me...

Well I guess I will have to live with my spare parts built, limited production, "stupidly fast, wickedly tempered, awkwardly named, possibly perfect little son of a benchwork"

That may be true, but its wayyy too heavy for N54 use ! But if that's true, doesn't it completely invalidate the tech's point of giving OP different oil because its not an M??

As a 1M owner (and ex M3 owner) I'm fine with that. The 1M doesn't have a bespoke engine like the M3, didn't get tires made specifically for the car like the M3, got leftover brakes, etc.

Why should I care? It's carrying around nearly 300 lbs less weight than the car most of those parts were designed for, and hence those parts (brakes, tires, etc) all work that much better. It just beat the next M5 by a significant margin in Evo's car of the year, and that car has all bespoke parts and engine. If the 1M is the result of raiding the parts bin then why would I complain? I'll take real world performance over "bespoke" parts any day.

Exactly. The 1M wasn't made using 'spare parts'. It was made using the best components BMW had to offer as a company at the moment it was made. It's like saying the Miami Heat is composed of second hand players... it's not, it took the best from different teams and voila!

Miami Heat=1M

Agreed. The tech does not seem to be knowledgeable with the Ms in my humble opinion. Just because all M cars do not use the 10W60 oil does not make them any less of an M Car. BMW M built the car so to me that makes it a true M Car no matter what engine they put in them.
