Broken chargepipe ?
So this weekend I went out for a spirited drive in the twisty roads. The only mod I have done to my car is a JB4, map 1.
After a while pushing the car, I felt some hiccups when accelerating in 3rd, kind of like when the traction control is interfering, but a bit harder. Few moments later the "Engine malfunction - limited power" light went on, and the car lost power and had a lot of hiccups. I immediately let go off the gas and something like 10 seconds later the light disappeared and the car seemed to work fine. From there on I was a bit more careful, and I didn't floor it, but carefully pushing the car to see how she responds. I got maybe one or two warning hiccups on the way back, under strong acceleration in 3rd. This time as soon as I got the hiccup I was easing it on the throttle, I made it home and the car seems to work just fine since then. So I guess my questions are: - I've read a lot of times on this forum the car goes into "limp mode" and people don't seem too worried about it. Is that the case here? - I still haven't read the codes yet, but could that be a chargepipe issue? I still have my stock CP. Any help is appreciated. |

check codes, without them its a shot in the dark. If your charge pipe blew off or cracked youll get boost leak codes, so see what comes up. "limp mode" can be totally harmless if its simply a matter of the engine being too hot, but there are many things that can cause it. I tend to doubt your cp blew off at relatively modest boost, but its absolutely possible.

What makes you think it is a chargepipe issue???
The very first thing you need to do is read the codes. If you do not have any, make sure your JB4 has auto clear turned off and try to replicate the issue. If is is as bad as you say it should throw another code. From the sounds of it your most likely having one of the following issues. 1 - Spark plug 2 - Coil pack 3 - Vanos solenoid Any of these can cause the issue you described. Let us know what you find. |

Ya OP i think some of us assumed you had already checked under the hood for cp damage or decoupling...have you looked yet? Its plainly visible, itll be obvious if it blew off.

i had the same issue with my jb4.. EXACTLY. I would describe it as a shudder during shifting. I first thought it was tranmission but then found out most of the time it is old spark plugs. not being able to deliver the precision needed during heavy shifts, believe it or not. read many accounts of this. since have gone back to stock but just FYI i am pretty sure i know the issue.

If it is the chargepipe and is broken or has come off / not sealing tight, the problem would not go away once your start your car again.
+1 that it may be a spark plug or ignition coil issue. I would start with changing spark plugs, as it is a cheaper approach to attempt to fix the issue. Surprised you are not triggering any codes though. |

I'm not sure if everyone knows this already... If your still under maintenance/warranty, you get a free spark plug replacement at 45K... Ask your SA
EDIT: That may be for N54 only. Not positive. |

The OP's problem could be ANYTHING!!! He should have his fault memory read for codes thrown. IF now codes were thrown... I would look for a boost leak. Dack

Yep, sounds like a misfire due to spark or fuel issue to me. Spark plugs or HPFP? Just need to check the codes.

Thanks guys, sorry I haven't visited the forum for a while. I did check my chargepipe and it looked ok, but I wasn't sure if there is a leak or something. I assumed this since it only happened in high RPM/high load. I will check the codes this weekend, I have been a little busy lately...
From the comments I understand that it's quite unlikely to be the chargepipe, so that's a good thing . It's interesting to know about the spark plugs, but I only have 26000km, so is it still possible? I hope it's not the HPFP.. I have ruff cold starts, I need to let the car idle for like 5-10s when it's been parked outside in the cold, otherwise it would stall. I think I may take out the JB4 for the winter, no need for that extra power on the snow, so at least I can compare with/without. |

Do you have your JB set to "auto clear" the codes? You might be throwing a code(s) but the JB could be clearing them for you. I would take or turn off the JB and see how the car runs. Don't take any chances when you take your car in for service. Also when you have the JB in any of its maps(other than map 0) the OBD-II port will not work. So your dealer will know somethings up. To be honest a HPFP wouldn't be that big a deal, it's a fairly quick fix mechanically, and will be covered under the extended warranty on the part. GL resolving whatever is causing these issues!

My 2010 135i did the same and it was the second bank injectors. Could be anything, but the odds that it's your chargepipe are pretty low.
My dealer replaced them under warranty btw. |
