I would also consider a pickup or SUV, something with more ground clearance and capabilities the 1M doesn't have. The SUV would comfortably carry 4-5 people (or more) and luggage, for instance. An X3 would still be entertaining to drive. A properly set up car will be fine unless you need to go through an unplowed area or a pile of snow pushed up by the plow. For those situations you need more ground clearance. A subaru might be OK, not sure of their ground clearance. I also have a SUV as a second vehicle for towing boats and utility trailers.

Wrx. I owned an 08, beat the hell out of it and it always ran strong. Also had it in 16 inches of snow, on DWS tires, and she performed great

So, I ended up with a nice MKVI Golf GTI, 6 speed, 2 door base model, I think it will prove a nice winter car. It is a decent set of new all season tires on it, I'll play it by ear to see if I get some dedicated snow tires. I looked for a manual Jeep Wrangler, but what a tall order that was, oh well...
Seems winter is coming early this year, already had a few winter driving tests, glad I got this figured out.

Just wondered what some of my fellow 1Mers have for winter vehicles. I'm looking at something under $15k, and that seems to get me into an '08 to '09 328xi, a '05 audi S4, or a '05 WRX. I've been thinking of something all wheel drive, and would prefer a manual....thoughts? What else should I consider?

I wish the prices on used golf Rs were a little softer...

My current winter tire set-up: Pirelli Winter 270 Sottozero Serie II (front: 245/35R19 93W XL | rear: 265/35R19 98W XL).

My future winter tire set-up: Michelin Pilot Alpin (front: 245/35R19 93W XL | rear: 265/35R19 98W XL) (this type of tire has been homologated by Porsche as standard (winter) tyre for the 911).

Generally speaking, 18" allows better driving than 19" as winter tire size.

Good pick! If you are in the city, can probably get away with the A/S (the Pirelli's that came on mine are pretty decent), but if in the burbs, would get winter tires; besides, they make it so much more fun to run around the mopes with lousy A/S. I get to have a lot of practice with the 1M until the Macan arrives...

The GTI has 18"s on it, I'm thinking that 16" or 17" with winters may improve the ride quality a bit.

I'd love to check out that Macan when you get it.

In fact you would be right; the Pirelli Nero Zero's that came with it weren't bad in snow, but the 16" Winters were much better and rode very nicely...PM me as to where you live and maybe we can compare VO's as well as winter beaters!
