Daytime Running Lights??

My car arrives any day, and I will soon be posed with the question:
Do I want daytime running lights to be permanantly on?

What do you guys think? Are there arguements for or against them?
Also: with the Adaptive Xenons, are the Daytime running lights just the "Angel Eyes"?

Are the tail lights also on all the time too?

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Is DRL an option? I don't think adaptive Xenon's have DRL or am I wrong? Mine has adaptive Xenon's, but no DRL.

The information I received from BMW USA says that DRL is now available through a software update at your dealer. After the update, you can personally turn it on/off iniDrive-equipped cars but you would need programming at the dealer otherwise.

IMO DRL is good safety.
I believe that I have seen that the DRL are halogen, even if you have xenon...and they are also used to "flash" your lights

I prefer to leave the regular lights on (adds having rear llights on) does any one know if the e90 has an auto light off feature?

According to the manual you can leave the headlights in "position 1" which is to the left, and this is automatic headlight mode. The manual states that the lights can be left in this position when you leave the car with no harm. However, the lights only come on if it is dark enough on this setting.

That's correct. That's what the software update I menioned above is supposed to correct.

Also, I believe the automatic setting uses the low beams, not the angel eyes. Also, I don't have IDrive and they work without additional programming at the dealer.

I'll bet you could have the dealer program the DRL so they would come on without having to put the headlight selection to automatic though. I might do this to save some insurance premium...

silverado, have you actually gotten the software update performed? Do you have confirmation from a dealer that these issues have been resolved?

Prompted by your statements I contacted BMWNA again. Some of you may recall I contacted them the first day the message appeared on BMW's Build Your 3 site regarding the missing features. This was their response to me today:

Dear Armen:

Thank you for your reply. At this time we have been informed that the
software issue in regards to the key memory features will not be
resolved until at least September of this year.

So I don't know what to make of this at this point.

Armen,

I have an appointment to do this on Thursday. I'll keep you posted. It seems that different people get different responses from BMWNA

Daytime running lights were turned on in my car by the dealer. This consists of the inner lights (not the xenon ones) coming on when you start the car. The angel eyes do not come on. This is not what I had hoped it would look like (I was looking for the xenons + angel eyes) but it still looks nice.

Supposedly, mine were updated today to include DRL, the auto-lock feature, and "correct" the inoperable blue-tooth and "seek" feature on the stereo.

It wasn't ready by the end of the day, and the service rep didn't call me before they closed. So...I'll find out tomorrow what the DRL actually is. I sure wish it were the halo (angel eye) lights!

Also, they discovered that my inoperable A/C is due to a freon leak, which they have yet to track down (which is why it wasn't ready).

Please let us know how the DRLs turn out... I'd love to see some picts.

Hopefully they're the Angel Eyes!

Here is a picture of my car with DRL on. Sorry for the mediocre quality; it was taken with my cell phone. Will try to post better pictures later.

You know, that kind of bites - not that that looks bad, but if you can't enable the "halo" lights, then what in the world are they for? And by enabling DRL to use the inner lights, I suppose that you can now never turn them off, which more-or-less diminishes the affect of the halo lights.

They do turn off when you turn the normal lights on. They stay on when you turn parking lights on.

When you "Flash to pass", do the lights get brighter to flash?

i've never been a fan of DRL. they are probably safe, but i think it takes away from the aesthetics of the car during the day.

Yes!!!!

I agree entirely

even if it was the "angel eyes" I wouldn't want them

seems like the kind of person who'd want to show the angel eyes all the time is the same kind of person who puts their xenons on 30 minutes before necessary just to brag that they've got xenons

?? Not everyone wants angel eyes on to "show off." I personally just love how they look when they're on. They just make the car's front look better and meaner.

I let the auto lights function switch on my xenon's...I admit it's sometimes in the afternoon, before i need them...but i'm too lazy or I forget to turn my lights off if I use them manually. BMW is corrupting me.

I would get DRL if it was the halo's. I don't like proper lights on during the day. People just think you're an idiot in SA.
