January 08 build here, long cranks (3-4 seconds so far) just started about a month ago @20k miles. I've got a BT cable & confirmed that no codes have been thrown... yet.

And my 3rd brake light is cracked. I'm just waiting for limp mode to get it all addressed at once.

2008, over 30k and no engine problems at all. I wouldn't be surprised if it happened, but so far it's been perfect.

Your thread title is misleading.
To be sure, you're HPFP has NOT failed correct? You're just getting long cranks?

Long cranks are not a definitive nor a precursor for HPFP failure.
There have plenty of pump failures without long cranks before the failure.
Many of us have had long cranks with HPFP failure.

From the numerous posts about long cranks, it seems that long cranks are an issue unto itself.
I had long cranks starting about 4 months into my new from BMW 135i.
No HPFP failure and it's a year old now.
BMW did the questionable reprogram and the long cranks subsided.
But, overall, performance does not feel the same. It simply feels like there is about 20-25% less power, in my case anyway.

Perhaps both things are somehow related to whatever it is that causes the HPFP failure, but it just doesn't seem that a pump failure follows a long crank situation.

For me, I'm more upset at the lower power feel than the potential for a HPFP failure. If I could have all my power back I'd gladly take a pump failure at this point and then get all my power back.

I get the feeling that BMW dialed back something with the reprogram for long cranks, with the hope that it would lead to less pump failure.
I'd like to see someone do a dyno pre and post reprogram.

I'm taking my 1 to the dealer next week for it's first oil service. I'm going to have them write up a ticket on the power issue. I'm sure they'll report "No problem found", but I want BMW to at least know that I'm not happy with the state of tune the reprogram does. I'm going to follow that up with a call to BMW NA to officially complain about paying for something I'm not getting. I'm thinking of getting the JB+ just to get some power back so that it feels like it did when I first got my 135i and how strong it felt before the freakin reprogram from slow lane hell.

Morning long cranks have begun, expected failure imminent. 2009 build, 14500 kms, no codes thrown.

Back when I was still on my second HPFP I started getting long cranks again-- so on my next scheduled maintenance, I told them about those symptoms, but they wouldn't replace the HPFP because no codes were thrown yet. They did run a test and found a faulty fuel pressure sensor, so at least I got that replaced, but it didn't fix my long cranks and rough idles.

A few weeks later, I got a really rough idle when starting after work. So I sat there and watched the display and the engine lurched and lurched, and finally the yellow engine light came on.
I was like -->
Woohoo! Finally threw a code! And then I drove triumphantly home in reduced power mode and brought the car into the dealer at the earliest appointment I could get. I wanted to drive into the service bay and tell somebody "here's your freaking code now give me a new fuel pump."

Now I'm on fuel pump #3....

that sucks man, sorry to hear. are you going to remove your ic/dp's/jb3/etc when it does give out? i'm likely in the same situation, except i really don't want to un-install my dp's, they were such a PITA to put on.

Long cranks? What's that? My 2011 5.0 starts instantly.

Like RPM wrote *IT MIGHT NOT BE AN HPFP FAILURE YET*. Just consider it one of those BMW intangibles that make them oh so special!

RPM90,

After my reprogram, the power feels exactly the same as it did, if not better than when I was experiencing long cranks. I believe the reprogramming only changed the way the fuel pump initializes (on door unlock rather than door opening). Perhaps you need to have your car reprogrammed again with the latest update to get some of that power back? There have been a few people on here who tests before/after and have reported no power loss after the reprogramming.

Well, I was hoping I could get the rest of the summer with the mods on but that seems unlikely so over the next few weeks I am going to tear down and go back to bone stock in preparation for BMW dealership fun.

There have been a few people on here who tests before/after and have reported no power loss after the reprogramming.
It was the latest "greatest" software they had.
There have been a number of people reporting the same thing I am experiencing. Some of them feel that some of their power has come back, some don't. For a while I thought my power was making a come back as the system was finalizing settings. But, overall, it just doens't feel the same.

It's another one of "those things". Some people are happy with the reprogram and some are not.
I think that most of those that are happy, feel that way because the reprogram fixed a problem they were having, so their car actually runs better. In my case, my car was running just fine, and after the program, not as good.

If you look for those threads on this issue, you'll also see that some of us are experiencing additional lag where we didn't have ti before.
That seems to have subsided to a decent level in my 1, but it's not like it was before.
