wrong engine oil?

When my dashboard shows up it is low on engine oil, I have put 2 quarts of this engine oil in my 2008 135i.

http://www.amazon.com/Castrol-06243-.../dp/B007G7PV6I

I then remembered it is the wrong one and it it is the european version i should go for which is more thicker than the american version. Should i go for an engine oil change or is it ok till the next service? Thanks!

The oil you put in is probably not BMW Longlife-01 certified, so it might not be a great idea to run it for a full 10k interval. I suspect you're already several thousand into your interval. It still appears to have all the latest API ratings (GF-5, SN, etc.) It should be fine to leave it until your next scheduled oil change.

The more operant question might be, why are you 2 quarts low? If you're beating on it enough to eat that much oil, I would probably change much more often anyway. Either that or something is wrong. 2 quarts low is a lot to lose, unless maybe part of that is you overfilling.

I am 6000 miles away from my scheduled service. I think I may have overfilled
with 2 quarts. I'll check that. As long as it is ok to run the next 6K miles, I am fine. I was worrying if I have to get an oil service done.

I agree with Freon. I change my oil every 6,000 miles and you may want to consider more frequent oil changes than the BMW every 15,000.

Any oil you use should say: BMW Long Life 1 or LL-1. IF it does not say that... you should not use it.

Dan@United or Jason@Tischer sell the correct BMW oil and filter kit for ~$70. That is a pretty hard deal to beat.

Changing your oil more often than what BMW says is a good idea. Our direct injection engines are really hard on oil. The longer you run it the thinner it gets bc it gets diluted with fuel. I also change my own oil every ~5K miles. Fresh oil is the best oil. I don't buy into BMW long OCI's.

OP, Follow this. Make sure you use the correct oil for your vehicle.

Also, check with your dealer, My dealer sells me the oil change kit with filter and all for 66 dollars and in stock so not all dealers are trying to make a fortune.

I would think you over filled it, when the light comes on initially, it should only be 1 liter low. At least that's been my experience 2-3 times now.
