Lightbulb Need Help: Continental ExtremeContact DW

Hi guys. Right now I still have my RFT and currently have quite okay tread but thinking to get non-RFT as soon as possible. First of all, do you think I should wait until I need to change the tire or as soon as I can?

I'm thinking about Continental ExtremeContact DW 215 in front and 255 in front. I have stock M-Sport suspension and stock 18" wheels, will I rub on the back? Is that possible to get 225 in front with factory setup? I don't have any plan to do fender roll, coil over, spring or whatsoever.

Let me know what do you guys think. Any recommendation and opinion about setup and tire brands is highly appreciated. Thanks

You will be able to fit 225 and 255 without issue. Not sure how hard you drive your car and whether you plan on any drivers events at the track. Depending on your planned use you may want to reconsider your selection.

As far as replacing the run flats I would wait unless you are changing out wheels at the same time. I know that there is a lot of flack on them here on the blogs. Frankly you can get better tires for a lower price if you get away from the run flats. However, I would use what you have before swapping them. Thats just me.

I bought a brand new set of DWS and took them to the track with less than 500 miles. I know that they are not track tires. However, I have had the stock runflats and some goodyear asym at the track and never had any issues. The DWS actually started chunking on the front outer edges and had to be replaced after the weekend. In fact I wasn't sure I would make it through the weekend. Now with that said. If you only intend to street the car then they seem fine. Decent traction, smooth, and quiet.

I will use it just plainly for street use and only few times of spirited driving. With what you said, so that's impossible to put 255 on the rear? For the front I'll probably stay with 215. Do you have any recommendation for brands?

Sure thing, that's what I'm thinking about. Will wait until the time comes unless I buy the wheels as well. Thanks

The 225 front and 255 rear will both fit fine. I've had good luck with Goodyear Asym and just bought some Michelin PSS. The Michelins are rated well by people on here but frankly I haven't had them long enough to comment.

So I won't have any rubbing issue? Some members said that Michelin tires are quite tall and sometimes it causes a rubbing issue. Have you heard about that? I just want to make sure I bought the right tires if the time comes. In terms of tread, which one do you recommend? I use it mainly in urban and sometimes highway and not really pull the car that hard. Is it that different between RFT and non? Thanks

The Continental DW is a great tire, but compared to the Micheline Pilot Supersport the side wall is a little softer so the steering respose is a little slower with the Conti's VS the Pilot's. Check the rolling diameter for the 255 to the 215's. The rolling diameter is pretty much the same with 215 and 245. The 255 will be a little bigger or smaller depending on the aspect ratio you choose. I had the conti DW and really liked them but I now have the Micheline PSS and think that they are a better tire all around. Of course they are both summer only tires.

Let your tires wear out first.

I am currently running the Conti DW in 225 front... 255 rear set up. They are good tires ..especially for the price. But you will notice that the 225 / 255 setup shows more sidewall .(they are taller tires). I think our cars look better in the stock size setup. More aggressive looking with less sidewall.
Up to you.

Okay. In terms of tire tread, which one do you think is better? Noob question here, what is rolling diameter? Is that the one like 35 or 40? Until know I don't have any plan to lower my car. Does your car lowered? If yes, do you have any rubbing issue with Michelin? Some guys said they were having a problem with rubbing by using Michelin and lowered. Thanks

Rolling diameter is the overall diameter of the tire. The overall diameter will change based on the aspect ratio of the sidewall-to-width of the tire (i.e. 215/55R17, 215/45R17 are different in overall rolling diameter).

Have you seen Michelin setup before? So, you recommend stock 215/245? I might change the rear setup only and the main reason I want to do 255 is to make it looks wider from behind, it's just my preference. Are you using stock wheels? If not, what size? Thanks

Okay. The tires that I look are 255/35ZR18 and 245/35ZR18 but the front is 215/40ZR18. Is the middle number that I suppose to look at? Like 35, 40, etc.

The first number is the tire width in mm. 225 = 225mm wide tire
The second number is the aspect ratio of the sidewall in percent. 40 = 40%
The last is the wheel diameter in inches.

So 215/50R17 is a 215 mm wide tire, with a 50% aspect ratio for a 17" wheel.

245/35 vs 255/35 - the 255 is wider and has a larger overall diameter, with a thicker sidewall, since 35% of 255 > than 35% of 245.

Make sense?

I am on stock wheels and suspension. I only have PPK1 & SSK with AFE in my BMW.

If you notice, your Bridestones' have a very narrow sidewall. I think they look great on the car.

Here's a Conti DW advert. to confuse things further.

Okay. It is look good, I like how the stock RFT looks but might change my mind when the time to change it comes. What the hell is that? They're trying to separate part of the tire for dry and wet? lol. Enough for me, just going to pick the best summer and reliable tires, haha

As others have said, the Continentals are good tires for the price. If you're considering Michelin Pilot Super Sports though, they will outperform these. I've had plenty of customers request this tire for their 1-series and they were happy with the results.

Is it that different? How about the tire wall, is it true that Michelin has higher wall? I just want to make sure though. At first I really want to get the wheels from you guys as wheel but don't feel like really want to do many mods relate with wheels, suspension and stuff. But I'll contact you guys if I change my mind. Btw, do you guys sell wheels as wheel? Or its part of tires and wheels package?

I have conti DW's in stock sizes 215/40-18 and 245/35-18. They will not rub if you go 255 in the back. I've been running the DW's for 3 years now and have also used them on the track. They are a excellent tire all around and handle great. The sidewalls are slightly softer than normal but asfar as I know you can also get them in XL rating with the stiffer sidewall.

I think that what I found on tire rack website, rated XL. So with that being said, the XL stuff means how stiff the sidewall is? Thanks to letting me know

Stiffness comes with the XL rating. XL (extra load)

My only point was the look of the car with the tires mounted. I am not saying the 225/255 setup looks bad... it is just that they have a taller sidewall and I noticed it. My opinion and preference is a lower profile OEM size tire on the 135. Hope this helps in your decision.
I have made my decision and I will be going back to the stock sizes.

If you are still going to plus size to 255 in rear, I would also plus size the front to 225, not leave them at 215. This may throw off the handling of the car.
Someone else here can comment on this. But, I would not change sizing on only one axle.

Okay. It is really helpful to me especially in making the decision whether to go with stock sizes or up size those tires. That's exactly what I'm thinking about, even though I don't really know about handling but I feel it's weird to change the size just on one axle only. Thanks!
